DREM makes available enlargement of the Time Series of the Information Society in Households (2002-2021)
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) makes available today on its website an enlarged Time Series of the Information Society in Households with results from the various editions of the Survey on Information and Communication Technologies Usage in Private Households since 2002.
The information relates to private households with at least one person aged between 16 and 74 years old. The following indicators stand out:
Private households with internet access at home increased fivefold between 2004 and 2021
In the Autonomous Region of Madeira, the number of households with internet access at home has been increasing throughout the period in question, with a more pronounced growth until 2015. While for 2004 it was estimated that only 15,365 households had an Internet connection at home, in 2015 this figure was already estimated at 65,269 households (99.2% of these with a broadband connection). The information available for 2021 shows that in the last six years there has been a 18.7% increase, being estimated that 77,527 households have internet access at home.
The largest increase in the share of households with home Internet access was between 2002 and 2003, rising from 8.7% to 18.3% (around half through broadband). The growth trend of this indicator has been very sharp over the last two decades, with an increase in the use of broadband Internet connections. In 2011, almost all households with internet access at home used a broadband internet connection (55.0% with internet connection and 54.4% with broadband). In 2021, the proportion of persons living in the Autonomous Region of Madeira aged between 16 and 74 years old who reported having used the internet in the last 3 months prior to the interview stood at 84.1%. This proportion increased by 32.6 percentage points (pp) compared to the beginning of the previous decade and 71.3 pp over 2002. Considering the last 8 years, it should be highlighted the increase in the proportion of persons who say they have used the Internet (68.6% in 2014; 87.0% in 2021) and the increase of 9.6 pp in the proportion of those who, within the group of those who used the Internet in the last 3 months, use the Internet every day or almost every day (80.4% in 2014; 90.0% in 2021).
The proportion of residents in the Autonomous Region of Madeira aged 16-74 who ordered online in the 12 months prior to the interview (40.7%) increased by 3.0 pp in 2021 compared to the previous year. Considering the available data, 2017 was the year in which this increase was more pronounced, going from 30.7% in 2016 to 36.0% in 2017 (+ 5.3 pp).
Considering individuals between 16 and 74 years old, internet users for private purposes in the 3 months prior to the interview, the majority used the internet mainly to communicate and access information. Performing advanced services increased by 40.3 pp between 2014 and 2021, from 57.1% to 97.4%. Using the phone or making video calls is one of the activities with the largest increase in users since 2014, registering a 34.8 pp increase (41.9% in 2014; 76.7% in 2021). Watching television or listening to radio/music online has registered an increase of 32.5 pp in recent years (43.0% in 2014; 75.5% in 2021). This is followed by the use of banking services through internet banking with an increase of 23.5 pp (39.2% in 2014; 62.7% in 2021). Learning-related activities show a strong increase in recent years, in particular attending online courses (4.3% in 2016; 18.8% in 2021) and communicating with teachers/trainers or other learners/students through an educational website (13.9% in 2016; 28.2% in 2021).
Filling in forms for the Public Administration hit a record high in 2021
The number of persons who report, in the previous 12 months, having filled in and sent official forms to public administration bodies more than tripled between 2008 and 2021, rising from 17.7 thousand to 57.4 thousand respectively. The figure for 2021 was the highest ever.
Confinement influenced teleworking figures of 2020 and 2021
Between 2020 and 2021 there was a decrease (-16.3 pp) in the proportion of employed internet users who carried out their work at home in the month prior to the interview (27.7% in 2020; 11.4% in 2021). Working from home using ICTs (teleworking) decreased by 14.4 pp in this period, standing at 10.0% in 2021. The reading of this result cannot be dissociated from the context of the COVID-19 pandemic in each of those years.
The most commonly used ICTs in telework were email (98.7% in 2020; 79.0% in 2021) and videoconferencing (79.1% in 2020 and 79.8% in 2021).
