Main fuels released for consumption increased by 14.1% over the previous year

According to data provided by Alfândega do Funchal, in 2021, the main fuels released for consumption (diesel oil and gasoline) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 142.3 million litres, having grown by 14.1% compared to 2020. The information broken down by main fuel type shows that 102.8 million litres were released for consumption in the reference period, up by 13.9% over the previous year. In the case of gasolines, the demand for unleaded 95 gasoline increased by 18.1% while the demand for unleaded 98 went up by 4.9%. The sales of these fuels were 29.9 and 9.6 million litres, respectively.

Concerning the gas sector, the release for consumption of propane and butane in 2021 stood at 10.7 (+5.0%) and 5.7 thousand tonnes (-5.7%), respectively. In turn, 27.6 thousand tonnes of natural gas were released for consumption in the reference year, an increase of 10.6% compared to 2020.

Despite the growth in 2020, when compared to 2019, the introduction of the main fuels shows a drop of 4.9%.

Taking into consideration the 4th quarter of 2021, the main fuels released for consumption (diesel oil and gasoline) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira totalled 38.2 million litres, growing by 13.0% compared to the same period of the previous year.

In that quarter, 27.2 million litres of the main fuel - diesel oil - were released for consumption, up by 11.7% over the year-ago period. Regarding gasoline, the demand for unleaded 95 gasoline increased by 23.3%, while the demand for unleaded 98 decreased by 2.9% between October and December 2020. The sales of these fuels were 8.5 and 2.4 million litres, by the same order.

As for gas, the release for consumption of propane and butane stood at 3.3 and 1.5 thousand tonnes, respectively, while 7.5 thousand tonnes of natural gas were released for consumption in the 4th quarter of 2021.

Mean prices in 2021 were higher than in 2020

In 2021, the mean maximum retail prices of diesel oil stood at €1.373, increasing by 22.0 cents compared to 2020 mean. A similar trend was observed with the unleaded 95 gasoline, whose average price was €1.591, rising by 21.8 cents between 2020 and 2021.

In the 4th quarter of 2021, the mean price for diesel oil was €1.501, above that registered in the previous year (€1.117) and the same quarter of the year before (€1.420 ). If compared to the last quarter of 2021, the average price of the unleaded 95 gasoline shows an increase of 34.2 cents (€1.703) compared to the same period in the previous year and continuing the sequence of increases in the three previous quarters.

The mean price for unleaded 95 gasoline was €1.703, up by 38.3 cents compared to the 4th quarter of 2020.
