In the 1st half of 2022

Main fuels released for consumption increased by 16.7% year-on-year

In the 1st half of 2022, the main fuels released for consumption (diesel and gasoline) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira reached 74.0 million litres, increasing by 16.7% compared to the same period in 2021. This volume is higher than that of the same period of 2019 by 1.7%.

In the 1st half of 2022, 53.2 million litres of diesel were released for consumption, up by 14.7% over the same period of the previous year. With regard to the types of gasoline, the 95-octane gasoline recorded a year-on-year increase of 32.1%, while the 98-octane gasoline decreased by 6.1%. Between January and June 2022, the quantities of 95 and 98 octane gasoline released for consumption stood at 16.6 and 4.2 million litres, respectively.

The release for consumption of propane and butane in the 2nd quarter of 2022 was around 6.9 and 2.6 thousand tonnes respectively (+39.0% and -24.4% than in the previous year). In turn, 15.7 thousand tonnes of natural gas were released for consumption in the reference period, +26.0% than in the same period in the previous year.

Looking only at the 2nd quarter of 2022, the release for consumption of the main fuels (diesel and gasoline) in this period was around 38.4 million, a value higher than in the same quarter the previous year by 9.4%. Between April and June 2022, the demand for diesel was 27.5 million litres (+7.4% compared to the same quarter in 2021). The 95-octane gasoline recorded an increase of 24.4% compared to the same period last year, while the 98-octane gasoline released for consumption was lower than that of the same period last year by 14.6%. The volume released for consumption standing of this type of gasolines stood at 8.9 and 2.1 million litres, respectively.

In the 2nd quarter of 2022, the quantity of propane and butane gas released for consumption was 3.5 and 0.8 thousand tonnes respectively, while the natural gas released for consumption stood at 6.1 thousand tonnes (-9.4% than in the same quarter of the previous year).

Average price rose in the 2nd quarter of 2022

In the second quarter of 2022, the average price of road diesel was 1.772 euros, above that recorded in the same period of the previous year (1.328 euros) and in the previous quarter (1.573 euros). In the case of 95 octane gasoline, the average price was 1.915 euros, which was higher than the price for the same period in the previous year (1.562 euros) also increased compared with the price for the first quarter of 2021 (1.757 euros).

This trend is in line with the rise in oil prices in the international markets, driven by the conflict in Ukraine.
