In the 1st half of 2023
Main fuels released for consumption increased by 5.1% year-on-year
According to the data provided by Funchal’s Customs, In the 1st half of 2023, the total amount of the main fuels released for consumption (diesel oil and gasoline) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira reached 77.7 million litres, showing a 5.1% increase compared to the same period in 2022 (74.0 million litres in the 1st half of 2022).
Specifically, in the 1st half of 2023, 53.4 million litres of the main fuel - diesel oil - were released for consumption, indicating a slight growth of 0.4% over the same period of the previous year. On the other hand, the demand for unleaded 95 gasoline increased by 17.5%, while the demand for unleaded 98 gasoline rose by 16.1%. The sales of these fuels were 19.5 and 4.9 million litres, respectively.
As for gas, the release for consumption of propane and butane in the 1st half of 2023 was 5.8 and 2.1 thousand tonnes, representing a decrease of 15.6% and 17.5% year-on-year, respectively. Additionally, 4.7 thousand tonnes of natural gas were released for consumption in the reference period, indicating a significant 70.2% decrease compared to the 1st half of 2022.
When narrowing the analysis to the 2nd quarter of 2023, the data reveals that in this period, the main fuels released for consumption (diesel oil and gasoline) amounted to 40.1 million litres, which is 4.4% higher than the year-ago quarter. Between April and June 2023, the demand for diesel oil reached 27.4 million litres, a decrease of 0.5% compared to the same quarter of 2022. In the case of gasolines, the consumption of unleaded 95 increased by 14.7%, reaching 10.2 million litres, while unleaded 98 witnessed a significant rise of 24.7%, reaching 2.6 million litres.
Mean price of fuels in the 2nd quarter of 2023 decreased sharply year-on-year
In the 2nd quarter of 2023, the mean price for diesel oil was 1.339 euros, which was lower than the price registered in the same period of the previous year (1.772 euros) and also lower than the price in the previous quarter (1.441 euros).
As for unleaded 95 gasoline, the average price in the 2nd quarter of 2023 was 1.613 euros, showing a decrease compared to the same period last year (1.915 euros). However, it was slightly higher than the average price in the 1st quarter of 2023 (1.593 euros).
