In the first nine months of 2023

Main fuels released for consumption increased by 5.1% compared to the same period last year

According to the data provided by the Funchal Customs, in the first nine months of 2023 in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), the main fuels released for consumption (diesel and gasoline) reached 120.0 million litres, a value higher than that of the same period in the previous year by 5.1%.

From January to September 2023, 81.4 million litres of diesel were released for consumption, up by 0.5% over the same period last year. As for gasoline, it was observed that the 95-octane and 98-octane varieties had a year-on-year increase of 16.4% and 15.4%, respectively. Between January and September 2023, 31.0 million litres of 95-octane gasoline were released for consumption, and 7.7 million litres of 98-octane gasoline.

For propane and butane gas, the release for consumption in the reference period was approximately 9.5 and 2.9 thousand metric tonnes, respectively (an increase of 10.4% and a decrease of 28.0% from the previous year). Regarding natural gas, the quantity released for consumption was 7.9 thousand tonnes, down by 62.0% over the same period last year.

Narrowing the analysis to the third quarter of 2023, it is observed that in this period, the release for consumption of the main fuels (diesel and gasoline) was approximately 42.3 million litres, which is 5.0% higher than the same period last year. During this quarter, the demand for diesel was 28.0 million litres (0.7% higher compared to the same quarter in 2022). Regarding gasoline, it was observed that the 95-octane variety had an increase of 14.6% compared to the same period the previous year, while the release for consumption of 98-octane gasoline was 14.3% higher than in the same period last year, with 11.5 and 2.8 million litres released for consumption in the months of July to September 2023, respectively.

The average prices of diesel and gasoline decreased in the third quarter of 2023 compared to the same period last year but increased compared to the previous quarter. In the third quarter of 2023, the average price of diesel was 1.449 euros, lower than the price in the corresponding period of the previous year (1.747 euros) and higher than the second quarter of 2023 (1.339 euros). As for 95-octane gasoline, the average price was 1.672 euros, below the price observed in the corresponding period of the previous year (1.811 euros) and higher than the second quarter of 2023 (1.613 euros).
