Main fuels released for consumption increased by 3.0% compared to the same period of the previous year
According to data provided by the Customs of Funchal, in the first six months of 2025, the main fuels released for consumption (diesel and gasoline) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) amounted to approximately 82.8 million litres, representing an increase of 3.0% compared to the same period of the previous year (80.4 million litres in the 1st half of 2024).
In the 1st half of 2025, a total of 53.6 million litres of diesel were released for consumption, reflecting a marginal growth of 0.1% year-on-year. With regard to gasoline, the sales of 95 and 98 octane gasoline were approximately 23.0 million and 6.2 million litres respectively, corresponding to increases of 7.6% and 13.1% relative to the same period in 2024.
As for propane and butane gas, the volume introduced for consumption during the reference period was approximately 6.5 and 1.8 thousand tonnes, respectively, representing changes of +19.3% and -35.4% compared to the same period of the previous year. Meanwhile, natural gas introductions totalled 12.6 thousand tonnes, reflecting a year-on-year rise of 31.0%.
Focusing specifically on the 2nd quarter of 2025, it is observed that the introduction for consumption of the main fuels (diesel and gasoline) amounted to 43.7 million litres, a 4.4% increase over the same quarter of 2024. During this quarter, demand for diesel oil reached 27.9 million litres, representing a rise of 1.1% compared to the corresponding period in 2024. Regarding gasoline, both 95 and 98 octane grades recorded growth of 9.6% and 16.6% respectively, with introductions for consumption between April and June 2025 amounting to 12.6 and 3.2 million litres respectively.
Gasoline and diesel prices move in opposite directions
In the 2nd quarter of 2025, the average price of diesel oil stood at 1 410 euros, higher than both the figure recorded in the same quarter of the previous year (1 351 euros) and that of the preceding quarter (1 403 euros). In contrast, the average price of 95 octane gasoline was 1 558 euros, which is lower than the price observed in the corresponding period of the previous year (1 652 euros) and the 1st quarter of 2025 (1 589 euros).
