In the 2nd quarter 2020
Balance between formed and dissolved corporations was positive (+27)
According to the data provided to Statistics Portugal by the Directorate General of the Policy of Justice, in the 2nd quarter of 2020, the number of formed corporations headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (111) was higher than the number of dissolved corporations (84), which resulted in a positive balance between the formation and dissolution of corporations (+27). Compared to the year-ago quarter, the number of formed corporations went down by 139 while the number of dissolved corporations decreased by 25. Looking to the available series, the values for the quarter are significantly low, in the case of dissolutions the lowest since the 4th quarter 2018. Regarding formation of corporations, despite the breakdown by quarter being unavailable between the 1st quarter 2006 and the 4th quarter 2019, it can be stated that in the last years never a such low value can be found.

The data broken down by economic activity show that the most pronounced positive balance was observed in “Real estate activities” (+10), followed by “Construction” (+9), “Consultancy, scientific and technical activities” (+5) and “Information and communication activities”(+4). Inversely, a negative balance was recorded in” Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles” (-6) and “Other service activities” (-2).
The balance between formed and dissolved corporations in the January to June 2020 period was +111 (355 formed corporations and 244 dissolved).
During the first six months of the year, the ratio between formed and dissolved corporations stood at 1.45, below national average (2.47).
