Balance between the number of company incorporations and dissolutions was positive (+159)
According to the data provided to Statistics Portugal by the Directorate General of the Policy of Justice, in the 2nd quarter of 2021, the number of company incorporations with head offices in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was higher (294) than the number of dissolutions (135), which resulted in a positive balance of 159 companies. Compared to the year-ago quarter, there were 183 more incorporations and 51 more dissolutions. It should be noted that in this period, mainly in the month of April, due to the economic paralysis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, was recorded the lowest number of company incorporations (18) and dissolutions (20) in the last 10 years.

The breakdown of data by economic activity shows that the most pronounced positive balance was observed in “Real estate activities”(+33), in “Accommodation and food service activities”(+27), in “Consultancy, scientific, technical and activities” (+18), in “Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles” (+15), in “Construction” (+14) and in “Transportation and storage” (+12). No negative balances were recorded.
During this period, the number of incorporations was higher than dissolutions in 9 municipalities: in Funchal (201 against 97), Santa Cruz (28 against 15), Ribeira Brava (14 against 3), Câmara de Lobos (15 against 5), Porto Santo (9 against 1), São Vicente (6 against 0), Calheta (7 against 2), Ponta do Sol (3 against 1) and Santana (2 against 1).
Between January and June 2021, the balance between company incorporations and dissolutions was +384 (616 incorporations against 232 dissolutions). By activity, it is observed that the most pronounced positive balance comes from "Consultancy, scientific, technical and similar activities" (+64), "Real estate activities" (+62), "Accommodation and food service activities" (+45), "Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles" (+44), "Construction" (+35), "Other service activities" (+27), "Transport and storage" (+24) and "Information and communication activities" (+22).
The municipalities that contributed the most to the value of the overall balance were Funchal (+254), Santa Cruz (+36), Ribeira Brava (+25) and Câmara de Lobos (+17). None of the municipalities had more dissolutions than incorporations.
In the first six months of the year, the ratio between incorporations and dissolutions in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 2.66, higher than the national average (1.45).
