Number of incorporated companies exceeded the number of dissolutions once again
According to the data provided to Statistics Portugal by the Directorate General of the Policy of Justice, in the 3rd quarter of 2021, the number of company incorporations with head offices in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was higher (257) than the number of dissolutions (98), which resulted in a positive balance of 159 companies. Compared to the year-ago quarter, there were 43 more incorporations and 13 fewer dissolutions.

The breakdown of data by economic activity shows that the most pronounced positive balance was in “Accommodation and food service activities” (+38), in “Real estate activities” (+34), in “Consultancy, scientific, technical and activities” (+24) and in "Information and communication activities" (+15). Negative balances were recorded in “Agriculture, farming of animals, hunting and forestry” and “Financial and insurance activities” (-1, in both activities).
During this period, the number of incorporations was higher than dissolutions in 9 municipalities: in Funchal (176 against 54), Câmara de Lobos (20 against 6), Calheta (9 against 3), Ponta do Sol (8 against 2), Ribeira Brava (10 against 6), Santa Cruz (19 against 16), Porto Santo (4 against 1), São Vicente (2 against 0), Porto Moniz (1 against 0). In Santana the balance was null (2 against 2). Only in the municipality of Machico, the number of incorporations was lower than the number of dissolutions (6 against 8).
Between January and September 2021, the balance between company incorporations and dissolutions was +543 (873 incorporations against 330 dissolutions). By activity, the most pronounced positive balance comes from "Real estate activities" (+96), "Consultancy, scientific, technical and similar activities" (+88), "Accommodation and food service activities" (+83), "Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles" (+50), "Construction" (+41), "Information and communication activities" (+37), "Transport and storage" and "Other service activities" (+33, in both activities). No activity registered a negative balance.
The municipalities that contributed the most to the value of the overall balance were Funchal (+376), Santa Cruz (+39), Câmara de Lobos (+31) and Ribeira Brava (+29).
In the first nine months of the year, the ratio between incorporations and dissolutions in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 2.65, higher than the national average (1.76).
