Balance between the number of incorporated and dissolved companies was positive (+98)
According to the data provided to Statistics Portugal by the Directorate General of the Policy of Justice, in the 3rd quarter of 2022, the number of company incorporations with head offices in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was higher (278) than the number of dissolutions (180), which resulted in a positive balance of 98 companies. Compared to the year-ago quarter, the number of incorporations went up by 21 and the dissolutions by 82.

The breakdown of data by economic activity shows that the most pronounced positive balance in the quarter was in “Real estate activities” (+36), in "Information and communication activities" (+24), in “Accommodation and food service activities” (+19), in "Construction" (+14), in “Administrative and support service activities” (+10) and in “Arts, entertainment, sports and recreation activities” (+9). Negative balances were recorded in “Consultancy, scientific and technical activities” (-15), in “Transportation and storage” (-6), and in “Financial and insurance activities” (-4).
During this period, the number of incorporations was higher than dissolutions in 8 municipalities: in Funchal (196 against 143), Câmara de Lobos (16 against 4), Calheta (14 against 2), Santa Cruz (22 against 14), Ribeira Brava (9 against 1), Porto Santo (6 against 2), Ponta do Sol and Santana (3 against 2 in both activities). With a null balance, the municipality of Machico (8 against 8) and Porto Moniz (0 against 0). Only in the municipality of São Vicente, the number of incorporations was lower than the number of dissolutions (1 against 2).
Between January and September 2022, the balance between company incorporations and dissolutions was +425 (1,038 incorporations against 613 dissolutions), which compares with +543 in the same period in the previous year. By activity, the most pronounced positive balance comes from "Real estate activities" (+111), "Information and communication activities" (+80), "Consultancy, scientific, technical and similar activities" (+66), "Accommodation and food service activities" (+63), "Construction" (+36), “Administrative and support service activities" (+30), “Human health and social work activities” (+29) and "Arts, entertainment, sports and recreation" (+24). Negative balances were observed in "Manufacturing" (-10), "Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorbikes" and "Transport and storage " (-4, in both activities) and in "Financial and insurance activities" (-3).
The municipalities that contributed the most to the value of the overall balance were Funchal (+269), Santa Cruz (+65), Câmara de Lobos and Calheta (+32 in both municipalities).
In the first nine months of the year, the ratio between incorporations and dissolutions in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 1.69, lower than the national average (3.63).
