Balance between company incorporations and dissolutions was nearly half thousand
According to the data provided to Statistics Portugal by the Directorate General for Justice Policy, in 2022, the number of company incorporations (1 317) with head offices in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, was higher than the number of dissolutions (821), which resulted in a positive balance of 496 companies. Compared to the previous year, the number of incorporations went up by 165 as well as the number of dissolutions by 365. It should be noted that the number of incorporations was the highest in the last 18 years, and the balance between incorporations and dissolutions was the second highest since 2009.

The data broken down by economic activity show that the most pronounced positive balance was recorded in “Real estate activities” (+130), by “Information and communication activities” (+93), by “Consultancy, scientific and technical activities” (+78), by Accommodation and food service activities” (+77), by "Administrative and support service activities" (+51), by "Construction" (+38), by "Human health and social work activities" (+33) and by "Arts, entertainment, sports and recreation" (+29). On the other hand, the most negative activities were “Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles” (-21), "Manufacturing" (-12) and "Water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities" (-4).
During this period, the number of incorporations was higher than dissolutions in 10 municipalities: in Funchal (904 against 592), Santa Cruz (139 against 59), Calheta (50 against 9), Câmara de Lobos (68 against 37), Ponta do Sol (26 against 12), São Vicente (15 against 1), Porto Moniz (12 against 0), Porto Santo (26 against 15), Ribeira Brava (32 against 26) and Santana (13 against 10). The municipality of Machico was the only one with a negative balance (29 against 56).
In 2022, the ratio between incorporations and dissolutions in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 1.60, lower than the national average (2.24).
Between October and December 2022, there was a positive balance between company incorporations and dissolutions (+71). Compared to the 4th quarter of 2021, when the balance was +153, it was noted that the number of new company incorporations remained the same, with an increase in dissolutions. By activity, the most pronounced positive balance came from "Administrative activities and support services" (+21), followed by "Real estate activities" (+19), "Accommodation and food service activities" (+14), “Information and communication activities” (+13) and “Consultancy, scientific and technical activities” (+12). On the contrary, "Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorbikes" (-17) recorded the most pronounced negative balance.
In the 4th quarter of 2022, the municipalities that contributed the most to the value of the overall balance were Funchal (+43), Santa Cruz (+15), Calheta (+9), Porto Moniz and São Vicente (both with +5).
