In the 1st half of 2023
Balance between the number of company incorporations and dissolutions was positive (+473)
According to the data provided to Statistics Portugal by the Directorate General of the Policy of Justice, in the 1st half of 2022, the number of company incorporations with head offices in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was higher (751) than the number of dissolutions (278), which resulted in a positive balance of 473 companies (327 companies compared to the same period of 2022). Vis-à-vis the same period of the prior year, there were 9 fewer incorporations and 155 fewer dissolutions.

The breakdown of data by economic activity shows that the most significant positive balance was observed in “Accommodation and food service activities” (+83), “Real estate activities” (+79), “Consultancy, scientific, technical and activities” (+62), “Construction” (+52), “Administrative and support service activities” (+51), "Information and communication activities" (+48), and “Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles” (+37).
During this period, the number of incorporations was higher than dissolutions in all municipalities: in Funchal (477 vs 198), Santa Cruz (76 vs 27), Câmara de Lobos (45 vs 16), Calheta (32 vs 5), Ponta do Sol (27 vs 4), Porto Santo (24 vs 3), Machico (28 vs 15), Ribeira Brava (20 vs 7), São Vicente (12 vs 1), Santana (7 vs 1) and Porto Moniz (3 vs 1).
In the first six months of the year, the ratio between incorporations and dissolutions in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 2.70, a lower ratio than the country’s ratio (3.69).
Between April and June 2023, the balance between company incorporations and dissolutions was +243 (333 incorporations vs 90 dissolutions), compared with +204 in the same quarter of the previous year (346 incorporations vs 142 dissolutions).
By activity, the most substantial positive balances come from "Accommodation and food service activities" (+45) and "Real estate activities" (+40).
The municipalities that contributed the most to the overall balance were Funchal (+152) and Santa Cruz (+33).
