In the 1st quarter of 2023

Balance between the number of incorporated and dissolved companies was positive (+230)

According to data provided to Statistics Portugal by the Directorate General for Justice Policy, in the 1st quarter of 2023, the number of company incorporations with head offices in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was higher (418) than the number of dissolutions (188), which resulted in a positive balance of 230 companies. Compared to the year-ago quarter, there were 4 more incorporations and 103 fewer dissolutions.

The breakdown of data by economic activity of the companies shows that the most pronounced positive balance was in “Real estate activities” (+39), in “Accommodation and food service activities” (+38), in " Consultancy, scientific and technical activities" (+37), "Construction" (+29), “Administrative and support service activities” (+27) and “Information and communication activities” (+24). Conversely, the only activity with a negative balance was "Transport and storage" (-2).

During this period, the number of incorporations was higher than dissolutions in all municipalities with Funchal (268 incorporations against 141 dissolutions) leading, followed by Câmara de Lobos (29 against 4), Santa Cruz (36 against 20), Ponta do Sol (16 against 2), Calheta (15 against 1), Porto Santo (14 against 3), Ribeira Brava (13 against 4); São Vicente (8 against 1), Santana (4 against 1), Machico (12 against 10) and Porto Moniz (3 against 1).

In the first three months of the year, the ratio between incorporations and dissolutions in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 2.22, a lower value than the national average (3.10).
