In the first nine months of 2024
More company incorporations and fewer dissolutions compared to the same period of the previous year
According to data provided by the Directorate General of Justice Policy to Statistics Portugal (INE), during the first nine months of 2024, the number of company incorporations (1,175) with headquarters in the Autonomous Region of Madeira exceeded the number of dissolutions (453), resulting in a positive balance of 722 companies. In the same period the previous year, the balance had been less favourable (+526), stemming from 1,022 incorporations and 496 dissolutions.
By sector of activity, it is observed that the most pronounced positive balance in the referenced period came from "Transportation and storage" (+165), "Accommodation and food services" (+149), “Real estate activities” (+97), "Construction" (+81), and "Consulting, scientific, technical and similar activities" (+55). A negative balance is only observed in "Water collection, treatment and distribution; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities" (-1).

All municipalities registered more incorporations than dissolutions, in the following descending order of balance: Funchal (760 incorporations vs. 359 dissolutions), Câmara de Lobos (85 incorporations vs. 10 dissolutions), Santa Cruz (104 incorporations vs. 37 dissolutions), Calheta (52 incorporations vs. 8 dissolutions), Ribeira Brava (52 incorporations vs. 10 dissolutions), Ponta do Sol (30 incorporations vs. 3 dissolutions), Machico (33 incorporations vs. 9 dissolutions), Porto Santo (17 incorporations vs. 5 dissolutions), Porto Moniz (12 incorporations vs. 2 dissolutions), Santana (14 incorporations vs. 4 dissolutions), and São Vicente (16 incorporations vs. 6 dissolutions).
In the first nine months of the year, the ratio between incorporations and dissolutions in Madeira was 2.6, a value lower than that observed for the country as a whole (3.7).
Narrowing the analysis to the third quarter of 2024, the data reveal that the number of company incorporations (367) with headquarters in the Autonomous Region of Madeira exceeded the number of dissolutions (116), resulting in a positive balance of 251 companies. Compared to the same period in the previous year, there were 96 more incorporations and 102 fewer dissolutions.
