In 2024
Balance between the number of company incorporations and dissolutions stood at +962
According to data provided by the Directorate-General for Justice Policy to Statistics Portugal, in 2024, the number of company incorporations (1 558) headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira exceeded the number of dissolutions (596), resulting in a positive balance of 962 companies (713 in 2023). Compared to 2023, there were 195 more incorporations and 54 fewer dissolutions.
It is worth noting that the number of incorporations was the highest in the past 23 years, and the net balance between incorporations and dissolutions was the highest since 2005.

Breaking down the data by economic activity, the positive overall balance was primarily driven by “Transport and storage” (+229), “Accommodation and food services” (+178), “Real estate activities” (+139), “Construction” (+112), and “Consulting, scientific, technical, and similar activities” (+89). Conversely, the only sector with a negative balance was “Water collection, treatment, and distribution; sanitation, waste management, and pollution control” (-1).
During the period in question, the number of incorporations exceeded the number of dissolutions in all 11 municipalities of Madeira: in Funchal (999 incorporations vs 454 dissolutions), Santa Cruz (140 incorporations vs 50 dissolutions), Câmara de Lobos (107 incorporations vs 27 dissolutions), Calheta (70 incorporations vs 9 dissolutions), Ribeira Brava (68 incorporations vs 15 dissolutions), Ponta do Sol (45 incorporations vs 3 dissolutions), Machico (56 incorporations vs 20 dissolutions), São Vicente (22 incorporations vs 6 dissolutions), Porto Santo (19 incorporations vs 5 dissolutions), Porto Moniz (15 incorporations vs 2 dissolutions), and Santana (17 incorporations vs 5 dissolutions).
In 2024, the ratio of incorporation to dissolution in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 2.61, higher than the national figure (2.30).
Focusing on the fourth quarter of 2024, the balance between company incorporations and dissolutions (+240) contributed to the annual growth mentioned above. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2023, when the balance was +187, the number of new company incorporations increased (from 341 to 383), while dissolutions decreased (from 154 to 143). By sector, the most significant positive balances were observed in “Transport and storage” (+64), “Real estate activities” (+42), “Consulting, scientific, technical, and similar activities” (+34), “Construction” (+31), and “Accommodation and food services” (+29). In contrast, “Manufacturing” (-3) and “Agriculture, livestock production, hunting, forestry, and fishery” (-2) were the only sectors where dissolutions outnumbered incorporations.
Regarding the municipalities that contributed most to the overall balance in the fourth quarter of 2024, Funchal (+144), Santa Cruz (+23), Calheta (+17), and Ponta do Sol (+15) stood out.
