Balance between the number of company incorporations and dissolutions stood at +941
According to data provided by the Directorate-General for Justice Policy (DGPJ) to Statistics Portugal (INE), during the first nine months of 2025, the number of company incorporations (1 242) with registered offices in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) exceeded the number of dissolutions (301), resulting in a positive balance of 941 companies. In the corresponding period of the previous year, the balance had been lower (+722), stemming from 1 175 incorporations and 453 dissolutions.
Breaking down the data by Economic Activity, the most pronounced positive balances during the reference period were recorded in “Transportation and storage” (+201), “Accommodation and food services” (+181), “Construction” (+121), “Real estate activities” (+87), and “Consulting, scientific, technical and similar activities” (+78). A negative balance was observed only in “Water collection, treatment and supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities” (-1).
All municipalities recorded more incorporations than dissolutions, in the following descending order of balance: Funchal (769 vs. 210), Santa Cruz (132 vs. 21), Câmara de Lobos (77 vs. 12), Calheta (51 vs. 6), Machico (63 vs. 23), Ponta do Sol (46 vs. 6), Ribeira Brava (39 vs. 8), São Vicente (23 vs. 7), Porto Santo (17 vs. 3), Porto Moniz (13 vs. 2), and Santana (12 vs. 3).
In the first nine months of the year, the ratio between incorporations and dissolutions in the ARM stood at 4.1, identical to that observed for the country as a whole.
Restricting the scope of analysis to the third quarter of 2025, the number of company incorporations (402) with registered offices in the ARM exceeded the number of dissolutions (127), resulting in a positive balance of 275 companies. Compared with the same period of the previous year, there were 35 more incorporations and 11 more dissolutions.
