In 2018
Electricity production decreased by 0.4% compared with the previous year
In 2018, the electricity production, estimated from the data on the distribution of electric energy provided by the Electricity Company of Madeira, decreased by 0.4% compared with the previous year.
Breaking down the data by source it should be highlighted that, compared to 2017, the electricity generated by thermal and solid waste sources decreased by 4.2% and 26.6% respectively. This decline was compensated by the growth in production through other renewable sources, namely hydropower (+24.8%) and wind power (+20.8%). Thermal power represented 69.2% of the total production in the 2018 (72.0% in the previous year), which means renewable energy accounted for 30.8% of the energy distributed in the reference year, the highest share since 2009, the starting year of the series. It should also be pointed out that the production of wind energy topped 100 Gwh for the first time.
The production of thermal power based on natural gas represented 16.3% of the total production mix, having decreased by 6.4% year-on-year. The 1.2% year-on-year decrease in the 4th quarter of 2018 contributed to the aforementioned drop in the electricity production of that year.
DREM releases more data about the energy sector for the year 2017
DREM publishes today on its website data for 2017 compiled by the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (DGEG) concerning the consumption of electric energy and the number of consumers of electric energy in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The energy balance for 2017 is also made available now.
