In 2019
Electricity production increased by 2.1% from the previous year
In 2019, the electricity production, estimated from the data on the distribution of electric energy provided by the Electricity Company of Madeira, increased by 2.1% compared with the previous year.
Breaking down the data by source it should be highlighted that the electricity generated by hydropower and wind power decreased by 54.6% and 6.6%, respectively. This decline was compensated by the growth in production through other sources, mainly by thermal power (+11.7%) and solid waste power (+17.1%). Consequently, the share of distributed energy using thermal source went from 69.2% in 2018 to 75.8% in the reference period, which means that the production of renewable energy has decreased to a share of 24.2% in 2019 (30.8% in the previous year).
It should also be mentioned that the production of electric energy using natural gas represented 18.8% of the total production mix, rising by 17.7% year-on-year.
In the 4th quarter 2019, the distribution of electric energy increased by 2.5% from the year-ago quarter.
