In the first six months of 2020

Electricity production decreased by 7.3% year-on-year

In the first six months of 2020, the electricity production, estimated from the data on the distribution of electric energy provided by the Electricity Company of Madeira, dropped by 7.3% year-on-year.

Breaking down the data by source it should be highlighted that, compared to in the first half of 2019, hydropower was the only source to have a slight year-on-year increase of 0.6%, while all the other sources showed a decrease.

It should also be mentioned that the production of electric energy using natural gas represented 18.9% of the total production mix, declining by 1.7% year-on-year.

In the 2nd quarter 2020, the distribution of electric energy decreased by 15.6% from the year-ago quarter (the highest drop since the beginning of the series, the 1st quarter 2009), reflecting the effects of measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. The value of the distribution of energy in this quarter (179.6 Gwh) was the lowest since the first observation of the series. Breakdown by month, the data show that the drop was more pronounced in April (-17.0%) than in May (-15.8%) and June (-14.0%).
