In the first nine months of 2022
Electricity production in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 8.0% year-on-year
In the first nine months of 2022, electricity production, estimated from the data of electricity distribution provided by the Madeira Electricity Company (EEM), increased by 8.0% year-on-year.
Breaking down the data by the source it should be highlighted that, compared to the first nine months of 2021 - in which the distribution of electric energy stood at 680.6 Gigawatt hours (GWh) - the electricity generated by solid waste power, wind and thermal power sources increased by 40.1%, 12.8% and 7.5%, respectively. Inversely, there was a decline in production through hydropower (-4.7%). The share of distributed energy using thermal sources went from 66.6% in the first nine months of 2021 to 66.3% in the reference period, which means that the production of renewable energy has increased to a share of 33.7% between January and September 2022 (33.4% in the same period of 2021).
It should also be mentioned that the production of electric energy using natural gas represented 16.0% (21.6% in the first nine months of 2021) of the total production mix, although recording a 20.0% decrease year-on-year.
Analyzing only the 3rd quarter of 2022, the data reveal that the distribution of electricity increased by 2.2% year-on-year, showing a deceleration compared to the previous quarter. This trend is explained by the recovery in economic activity in the same period of 2021, in which, the values recorded for overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments were close to the pre-pandemic levels.
