Total electricity consumption increased by 3.1% compared to the previous year
Following the information released by the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (DGEG) on the 29th of November, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) makes available today data on gross production, consumption, and the number of electricity consumers in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), with reference to 2023.
The gross production of electricity in the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 2023 amounted to 952.6 GWh, representing an increase of 1.8% compared to 2022. Analysing the source of energy production, it is concluded that 77.3% were thermal power sources, 12.2% wind power, 7.0% hydropower, and 3.5% photovoltaic sources.
The total consumption of electricity was around 875.0 GWh, +3.1% compared to the previous year. By type of customer, the most pronounced change was observed in the “Non-Domestic” segment (which represents 43.0% of total consumption), where an increase of 4.9% was recorded compared to 2022. This was followed by “Agriculture” with +3.6%, “Domestic” with +3.2%, “State Buildings” with +2.1%, and “Industry” with +1.6%. The only reduction was recorded in “Public Street Lighting,” with -3.8%.
By municipality, the most pronounced increases in consumption were observed in Machico with +5.0%, Porto Moniz with +4.9%, Santa Cruz with +4.8%, and Funchal with +3.5%. Conversely, the municipalities of Ribeira Brava, Ponta do Sol, and Santana recorded decreases of -3.1%, -1.2%, and -1.0%, respectively.
Regarding the number of electricity consumers, it was found that in the year under review, there was an increase of 1,628 (+1.1%) compared to 2022, bringing the total to 145,739 consumers, which constitutes the highest record ever. By municipality, Calheta and São Vicente (both with +1.8%) led the increases, with the remaining municipalities experiencing less pronounced changes (between +0.8% in Santana and +1.3% in Porto Moniz).
