DREM updates the time series on social protection with data for 2016
1. Social Security
At the end of 2016, there were 67.5 thousand Social Security pensioners in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, corresponding to roughly 25% of the resident population. From that total, 60.6% received old age pensions, 27.5% survival pensions and 11.9% disability pensions. Compared to 2015, the number of pensioners increased by 0.2%, as a result of the positive change in the number of old age pensioners (+0.8%). The number of recipients survival pensions and disability decreased by 0.8% and 0.6% respectively.
The annual mean value paid to pensioners increased by 3.2% between 2015 and 2016. In this year, the mean paid value in old-age pensions stood at 5,303 euros, above the average value of the disability (5,074 euros) and survival pensions (2,685 euros).
The total value paid reached 315.2 million euros, up by 3.2% over the previous year. Of this total, 13.1% was destined for disability pensions (41.4 million euros), 70.5% for old age pensions (222.2 million euros) and 16.4% to survival pensions (51.6 million euros). The three types of pensions registered a year-on-year increase.
13.5 thousand persons were recipients of the unemployment benefit, down by 8.0% from 2015. 56.0% of the recipients were male and 4.5% were under than 25 years. The 40-49 years age group had the highest share (26.2%).
The average duration of the unemployment benefit was 205 days, down by 9 days from 2015. The average value of this type of benefit was 3,038 euros, a 7.3% decrease over the previous year.
The number of recipients of the child allowances dropped by 3.1% while the number of recipients of allowances for assistance by a third party increased by 1.3%.
6.3 thousand persons (of which 49.7% males), benefited from social integration income. 40.6% of the recipients were under 25 years.
The recipients of sickness benefits rose by 4.8% between 2015 and 2016, reaching a total of 9.8 thousand in this year. The mean number of days subsidised stood at 75 days, down by four from the previous year. The total paid values amounted to 12.2 million euros, down by 2.2% from 2015.

2. Civil Service Retirement System Scheme
At the end of 2016, the number of pensioners of the Civil Service Retirement System Scheme stood at 12.5 thousand (70.4% of which were recipients of disability and old age pensions) the same value as in 2015.
