DREM updates the time series on Social Protection with data for 2021

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today on its website, the Time Series on Social Protection, updated with information from 2021. The starting year for most tables is 2004.

1. Social Security - Number of pensioners decreased slightly

At the end of 2021, there were 66 500 active Social Security pensioners in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, corresponding to 26.5% of the resident population. Of that total, 63.2% received old-age pensions, 27.5% survivor´s pensions and 9.3% disability pensions. Compared to 2020, the number of pensioners decreased by 0.5%, as a result of the decline in the number of disability pensions (-2.4%), old-age (-0.4%) and survivor´s pensions (-0,1%).

The annual mean value paid to pensioners rose by 0.9% between 2020 and 2021, to 5 125 euros, as a result of an increase of 1.2% in the average values of old-age and survivors' pensions. The average value of disability pensions decreased by 1.6%. In this year, the mean paid value in old-age pensions stood at 5 965 euros, exceeding the average value of the disability (5 566 euros) and survivor´s pensions (3 068 euros).

The total value paid, at the end of 2021, reached 352.1 million euros, up by 0.8% over the previous year. Of this total, 73.4% was destinated for old-age pensions (258.3 million euros), 16.5% for survivor´s pensions (58.2 million euros), and 10.1% for disability pensions (35.6 million euros). Compared to 2020, there were positive changes of 1.2% in the amounts processed in old-age pensions and 1.3% in survivors' pensions. Regarding the amounts processed in disability pensions, there was a negative change of 3.0%.

In the year under review, 10.6 thousand persons received unemployment benefits, representing a decrease of 5.1% compared to the previous year, of whom 35.6% had not received this benefit in 2020. The distribution of unemployment benefit recipients by sex was balanced: 47.4% were men and 52.6% were women. Regarding age, 23.6% were aged between 40 and 49, followed by the 30–39 age group (23.3%) and those aged 55 and over (22.2%). Approximately 6.5% were young persons(under 25 years).

In 2021, the average duration of unemployment benefit receipt was 188 days, lower than in 2020 (194 days), while the average amount of this benefit amounted to 3 120 euros, an increase of 0.5% compared to the previous year.

As for the social integration income, about 7.5 thousand persons (of which 47.8% were males), were given this type of social benefit, up by 6.3% from 2020. By age group, 36.5% of the beneficiaries were under 25 years. The amount processed in this social benefit ascended to 9.1 million euros, increasing by 8.2% compared to 2020.

The number of persons receiving sickness benefits grew by 3.7% between 2020 and 2021, reaching a total of 12 000 persons this year. The mean number of days processed for this type of benefit stood at 87 days, down by 3 from the previous year. The total paid values amounted to 21.5 million euros, representing a drop of 0.5% compared to 2020.

In 2021, 13.3 million euros were processed for the 3 791 beneficiaries of the social provision for inclusion, with the age group of 30 to 39 years old having the highest number of beneficiaries (940; 24.8%), followed by the groups of 55 years and over (922; 24.3%) and 40 to 49 years (721; 19.0%).

2. Caixa Geral de Aposentações - Number of users of the system increased

At the end of 2021, the number of pensioners of the Civil Service Retirement System Scheme stood at 13,340 (up by 196 persons over 2020). The majority (70.9%) were beneficiaries of disability and old-age pensions.
