Turnover and Gross Value Added of non-financial enterprises headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira were severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today on its official statistics website a set of tables on financial and non-financial enterprises headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, with data for the 2015-2020 period. The information for 2020 is final, thus replacing the provisional data released last October. This allows DREM to present a wider range of information for the year 2020. Data of establishments (local units) will only be available next May.
In 2020, there were 28,905 enterprises headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, 231 of which in the financial sector and 28,674 in the non-financial sectors. Of that total, two out of three were individual enterprises and one out of three, were companies. The 28,905 enterprises employed 79,507 persons, 79,121 in the non-financial sector and 386 in the financial sector.

In the reference year, the number of non-financial enterprises sector of the Autonomous Region of Madeira totalled 28,674, up by 13 enterprises over the previous year. In Portugal, the decrease rate was 1.3%. Regarding employees, there was an overall decrease, compared to 2019, of 0.4% to a total of 79,121 (-2.0% in the Country). It should be noted that 74.9% of the personnel employed belongs to enterprises.
By size, the regional enterprises belong almost exclusively to the groups of SMEs. Within these, most of them are micro-enterprises (96.13% of SMEs). In 2020, the number of enterprises of medium size stood at 152, down by 6.2% over 2019, while the large ones were 21 (same as in 2019). In the country, the share of SMEs is 99.90%.

In 2020, the turnover generated by Madeira’s enterprises stood at 4,918.7 million euros, down by 14.6% from 2019. The Gross Value Added at market prices (GVAmp) stood at 1,374.4 million euros, decreasing by 22.8%. The net profit of the period also showed a negative performance declining by 39.1% in 2020 to 414.2 million euros.
92.4% of the GVA is generated by companies and 76.2% by SMEs. The 21 large-sized enterprises headquartered in the Region concentrated 23.8% of the GVA.
By economic activity, the most important sector was “Trade” (298.2 million euros, 21.7% of the GVA) followed by “Construction” (200.8 million euros; 14.6% of the GVA), “Transportation and storage” (130.2 million euros, 9.5% of the GVA) and “Accommodation and food service activities” (124.4 million euros, 9.1% of the total GVA). Compared to 2019, and as a result of the pandemic, "Accommodation and food service activities” moved from the first to the fourth position in the ranking, with the other activities mentioned moving up one position.
