DREM releases the 2023 edition of the Statistical Yearbook of the Autonomous Region of Madeira
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) has released the Statistical Yearbook of the Autonomous Region of Madeira 2023, a comprehensive compilation of statistical information at regional and municipal levels. This publication is a vital resource for developing regional policies and analysing territorial dynamics.
For the 2023 edition, DREM has introduced a restructured format. The Yearbook, now bilingual (Portuguese and English), includes only texts and infographics (one page each per chapter). The statistical tables are provided separately.
The publication is organised into four main chapters - The Territory, The People, TheEconomic Activity, and The State- which are further divided into 28 subchapters.
To complement this publication, an accompanying analysis ("Em Foco") summarises results across these subchapters. Below are the highlights:
Territory – "In 2023, the average annual temperature recorded at the Funchal/Observatory station was 21.6°C, the highest ever recorded at this station."
Environment – "The water distributed in the Region reached 83.7 m³ per inhabitant in 2023, surpassing the national average of 64.6 m³ per inhabitant."
Population – "The region recorded a population growth of 2 552 persons in 2023, attributed to a positive migratory balance (+3,592) and a negative natural balance (-1,040)."
Education – "In the 2022/2023 school year, the gross transition/completion rate for secondary education rose to 90.2%."
Culture and Sports – "Municipal expenditure on cultural and creative activities in the Region increased by 29.2% in 2023."
Health – "In 2023, the number of doctors and nurses per 1 000 inhabitants increased in the Region."
Labour Market – "The unemployment rate fell to 6.0% in 2023, a 0.8 percentage point decline compared to 2022."
Social Protection – "As of December 2023, there were 67 300 Social Security pensioners in the Region, representing 26.2% of the resident population."
Income and Living Conditions – "The rate of severe material and social deprivation decreased by 1.5 percentage points to 6.3% in 2023."
Regional Accounts – "The region’s GDP approached 7 billion euros in 2023, reflecting a real growth rate of 4.5%."
Prices – "The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 5.0% in 2023, exceeding the national rate of 4.3%."
Enterprises and Establishments – "The turnover and employees of non-financial enterprises in the Region grew faster than the national average in 2023."
International Trade – "Despite a decline in exports and imports in 2023, the Region maintained a positive trade balance in goods with foreign countries."
Agriculture and Forestry – "The Utilised Agricultural Area (UAA) reached 4 702.9 hectares in 2023, a 2.1% increase compared to 2019."
Fishery – "The first-sale value of fish unloaded increased by 17.1% in 2023."
Energy – "Total electricity consumption in the Region grew by 6.2% in 2022 compared to the previous year."
Construction and Housing – "In 2023, the number of licensed buildings remained unchanged, while completed buildings increased by 20.1%."
Transport – "Passenger movement at ARM airports grew by 18.1% in 2023 compared to 2022."
Communications – "In 2023, the number of fixed broadband internet accesses per 100 inhabitants in the Region was slightly below the national average."
Tourism – "In 2023, the number of overnight stays per 100 inhabitants in the Region was approximately five times higher than the national average."
Credit Institutions and Financial Enterprises – "In 2023, housing loans constituted the majority of loans in the Region, unlike the national trend."
Business Services – "The turnover of business service activities grew by 11.9% in 2023 compared to the previous year."
Science and Technology – "R&D expenditure as a percentage of GDP stood at 0.38% in 2022, significantly below the national average of 1.69%."
Information Society – "Internet access among households and persons aged 16–74 increased in 2024."
Internal Trade – "Turnover from businesses in the trade sector based in the Region grew by 1.2% in 2023."
Regional and Local Administration – "The regional public administration returned to a positive balance in 2023, while municipal revenue increased in 2022, although expenditure declined."
Justice – "Crimes related to driving under the influence of alcohol decreased in the region in 2023."
Political Participation – "The 2024 elections for the National Parliament in Madeira recorded the lowest abstention rate since 1999."
