DREM releases the results of the National Health Survey 2014 for the Autonomous Region of Madeira
During 2014 the National Health Survey was carried out throughout the country, an initiative taken by the National Health Institute Doctor Ricardo Jorge in partnership with Statistics Portugal (INE). In the Autonomous Region of Madeira the collection of data was performed by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM).
This statistical operation had as its main goal the characterisation of the resident Portuguese population aged 15 and over concerning health in three different aspects: health condition, health care and health determinants related to life style.
In 2014, 56.6% of the resident population in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) aged 18 and over was overweight. The percentage was higher in males (57.9%) than in females (55.6%). The overweight problems affect mainly those over 45 years old, especially the age group between 65 and 74 years old (76.8%).
Concerning chronic disorders, the most common was backache (26.4%), followed by arterial hypertension (22.7%) and allergies (20.4%). Chronic diseases affect women more than men.
19.3% of the Madeiran population aged 50 and over declared to have done at least one colonoscopy in the 10 years before the interview. This percentage is below the one registered for the country (35.1%). In the case of mammograms, the rate of women resident in the ARM aged between 50 and 69 years old which did the exam in the two years previous to the interview (70.4%) is also below the country’s average (84.2%).
During the last quarter of 2014, 66.0% of the resident population declared to have consulted a general practitioner or family doctor in the previous 12 months. Women (72.0%) visit the doctor in a higher proportion than men (59.0%). Concerning the age group the largest gap is between those aged 65 and over (84.1%) and those aged between 25 and 34 years old (55.0%). 50.7% of the population had visited a dentist in the last 12 months.
48.4% of the population aged 15 and over consumed medicines in the two weeks before the interview.
In 2014, the percentage of smokers among people aged 15 and over stood at 20.7%, while 64.0% ingested alcoholic beverages at least once in the last 12 months previous to the interview.
