DREM releases the Complete Life Tables for the Autonomous Region of Madeira (2015-2017)
The results published by Statistics Portugal (INE) show that life expectancy at birth for the population of the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 78.18 years; 74.25 years for men and 81.43 years for women. There is a continuing trend of an increasing longevity.
Life expectancy at birth is greater among women, however the gap between genders shrunk between 2014-2016 (7.46 years) and 2015-2017 (7.18 years). Madeira is the NUTS 2 region in which the discrepancy between sexes regarding longevity is greater.
Life expectancy at 65 years old for the population of the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 17.75 years. Men aged 65 can expect to live an additional 15.12 years on average, and women, 19.40 years.
In the last seven years, Madeira was the NUST2 region in which life expectancy (at birth and at 65 years old) increased the most.

For Portugal, life expectancy at birth was estimated at 80.78 years (2.60 years higher if compared with the Autonomous Region of Madeira). In the country, life expectancy for the female gender is 83.41 years while for men is 77.74 years. Life expectancy at 65 years for the Portuguese population stood at 19.45 years: 17.55 years for men and 20.81 for women.
