In the last decade
Life expectancy at birth increased in the Autonomous Region of Madeira
The results published by Statistics Portugal (INE) show that life expectancy at birth for the population of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in the 2016-2018 period stood at 78.30 years: 74.34 years for men and 81.44 years for women. These values were higher than those estimated for the 2008-2010 period (71.85 years for men and 79.68 for women), which shows that the trend of an increasing longevity in the region in the last decade remains.

Life expectancy at birth is greater among women, however the gap between genders shrunk between 2008-2010 (7.83 years) and 2016-2018 (7.10 years). Still, Madeira is the NUTS 2 region in which the discrepancy between genders regarding longevity is greater (5,65 years for Portugal).
Life expectancy at 65 years old for the population of the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 17.69 years. Men aged 65 can expect to live an additional 15.04 years, on average, and women 19.37 years. Note that we estimate a slight decrease in life expectancy at age 65 compared to the previous period (15.12 years for men and 19.40 years for women).
For Portugal, life expectancy at birth was estimated at 80.80 years (2.50 years higher if compared with the Autonomous Region of Madeira). In the country, life expectancy for the female gender is 83.43 years while for men is 77.78 years.
Life expectancy at 65 years for the Portuguese population stood at 19.49 years (1.80 years more than in Madeira): 17.58 years for men and 20.88 for women.
Although life expectancy (at birth and at 65 years old) is still lower than the estimated for the country, Madeira was the NUTS 2 region in which life expectancy increased the most in the last decade.
