The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira releases, for the first time, a time series of accidents at work, for the period 2000-2015.
Between 2000 and 2015, the accidents at work in the Autonomous Region of Madeira decreased at an average annual rate of 0.9%, registering its highest value in 2005 (4,196 accidents) and its lowest in 2013 (3,224). The period from 2009 to 2013 is characterized by consecutive drops at an average annual rate of 5.0%. In 2014, there is a reversion of this trend, with the number of accidents at work increasing to 3,547 occurrences. However, in 2015, it decreases again to 3,488 (down by 1.7% from the previous year).
The highest number of mortal accidents was registered in 2003 (18) and 2004 (14), the majority of which in the construction sector (13 in 2003 and 10 in 2004).
Until 2008 about one third of the accidents were related to the “Construction” sector. From 2009 onwards this share dropped to a minimum of 14.3% in 2015. The “Trade”, “Accommodation and food services” and “Manufacturing” sectors concentrated 16.0%, 15.9% and 6.9% of the accidents. In the last 4 years, the number of accidents at work in “Public administration and defence; compulsory social security” has been increasing, representing in 2015 9.4% of the total number of accidents at work.
The majority of accidents involved men (annual average of 77.5%) and people in the 25-44 years old class (annual average of 55.5%).
The professional groups of “Service and sale workers” and “Craft and related trades workers” registered the highest number of accidents in 2014 and 2015.

“Wounds and superficial injuries” and “Dislocations, sprains and strains” were the most common type of injuries which resulted from accidents at work, representing in 2016, 39.7% and 40.6% of the total. Since 2005, more than half of the accidents affected the upper or the lower extremities of the body.
About one third of the non-fatal accidents did not result in absence from work. Excluding this group, the most common period of absence from work was 7 to 13 days, which was, on average, the outcome of 17.2% of the non-fatal accidents at work.
The largest number of lost days of work due to accident was registered in 2006 (129,646). In 2015, this indicator stood at 98,217 days.
