DREM releases new time series on lifelong learning for the Autonomous Region of Madeira
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira releases on its website a new time series, with the main indicators of the Adult Education Survey (AES), which was conducted throughout the country in 2007, 2011 and 2016.
In 2016, 44.9% of the people aged between 18-64 years participated in some lifelong learning activity, i.e., approximately half of the adult population had access to some formal and/or non-formal education activity in the 12 months prior to the interview. These results show higher participation levels compared to 2011 and 2007 by 0.7 and by 25.0 percentage points (p.p.), respectively. In 2016, women (46.9%) continued to register higher participation rates than men (42.7%).
The participation of the adult population in formal education stood at 11.3% in 2016, up by 2.7 p.p. from 2007 and down by 0.3 p.p. from 2011.
After the significant increase between 2007 (13.9%) and 2011 (40.0%), non-formal education activities remained almost unchanged (39.3%) compared to the 2011 survey. In 2016, the participation rate stood at 36.5% for men and at 42.0% for women.
The participation in informal activities registered an important growth, increasing from 23.4% in 2007 to 67.1% in 2011 and to 86.1% in 2016. In this year, the participation rate stood at 82.2% for men and at 89.6% for women.
In 2016, 11.5% of the adult population did not engage in any form of learning activity (whether formal, non-formal or informal). The rate for men was 15.0% and for women 8.4%. Throughout the 3 years in which the Survey took place (2007, 2011 and 2016) this variable had a significant decline, dropping from 68.4% in 2007 to 26.0% in 2011 and to 11.5% in 2016.
The proportion of population who knew at least one foreign language rose from 44.2% in 2007 to 79.0% in 2016, with similar percentages for men (77.1%) and women (80.9%).
