64% of companies were still in production or operation in the week from 13 to 17 April 2020

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today the results of the 2nd reporting week (13 to 17 April) of the Fast and Exceptional Enterprise Survey (COVID-IREE), a statistical operation devised by Statistics Portugal and the Bank of Portugal, which aims to identify the effects of the pandemic on business activity.

In the Autonomous Region of Madeira, DREM coordinated the data collection from the enterprises. The response rate in this 2nd week was about 90%, much higher than in the country (66%).

In the week from 13 to 17 April 2020, that 64% of companies were still in production or operation (82% in the country), even partially and 33% were temporarily closed (16% in the country).

The percentage of responding enterprises reporting that the pandemic led to a decrease in turnover remained high (88%). This reduction was higher than 50% in a large proportion of the responding enterprises (51%). As factors with much impact on the reduction in turnover, the restrictions in the context of the state of emergency and the absence of orders/clients were most frequently mentioned by enterprises.

70% of the enterprises reported reductions in the persons employed effectively working and 40% reported a reduction of more than 50%. The proportion of enterprises using the simplified layoff  grew from last week (58% compared to 52% in the previous week).

A new survey question reveals the extent to which enterprises have adapted their activity as a result of the pandemic, with almost 23% of the responding enterprises referring to diversification or modification of production and 24% referring to changing or strengthening distribution channels.
