Number of opened cases in the 1st instance courts of the District of Madeira related to bankruptcy, insolvency and recovery of enterprises had both a quarterly and a year-on-year drop
According to the information provided by the Directorate-General for Justice Policy (DGPJ), the number of opened cases in the District of Madeira related to bankruptcy, insolvency and recovery of enterprises dropped from 49 in the 2nd quarter 2020 to 44 cases in the 3rd quarter 2020 (-10.2%). Compared to the previous quarter (74 cases), the decline was more pronounced (-40.5%). It should be highlighted that the number of opened cases in the reference quarter is the lowest of the available time series, which starts in the 1st quarter 2015.
In the 3rd quarter 2020, 44 closed cases were counted, 39 of which ended in bankruptcy or insolvency. This number of bankruptcy/insolvencies was almost identical to the previous quarter (38), but lower than the same quarter of the previous year (58).
Regarding the type of legal person, the proportion of natural persons (53.8%) involved in this type of cases was bigger than the share of legal persons. Of the 39 decreed bankruptcies/insolvencies in this quarter, 21 were of natural persons and 18 of legal persons.
