DREM updates the time series of temperature and precipitation with data for 2018
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today on its website, the time series of temperature and precipitation, updated with information for 2018. These data is provided to DREM by the Regional Delegation of Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere.
In 2018, the annual precipitation stood at 550.9 mm in Funchal (377.0 mm in 2017) and at 459.5 mm in Porto Santo (366.9 mm in 2017). 2010 remains as the year in which the highest precipitation levels of the period were recorded, both in Funchal (1,476.3 mm) and in Porto Santo (598.5 mm).
In 2018, there were 310 rainless days in Funchal (323 in 2017) and 292 days in Porto Santo (317 in 2017).

In the year of 2018, March was the month in which the highest precipitation levels were observed in Funchal (163.5 mm). In Porto Santo, February (129.0 mm) was the wettest month. By contrast, in the months of August and September no precipitation was recorded in Funchal, while in Porto Santo, September had with no precipitation.
In the last 43 years, the annual average temperatures in Funchal ranged between 18.1°C (temperature recorded in 1976 and 1984) and 20.6°C (in 2004). In Porto Santo, in the period between 2004 and 2018, this indicator registered its lowest point in 2005 (18.7°C) and its highest in 2017 with 19.7°C. In 2018, the annual average temperature was 20.0ºC in Funchal (-0.5ºC than in 2017) and 19.0ºC in Porto Santo (-0.7ºC than in the preceding year).
August was the warmest month of 2018 in both meteorological stations, with medium monthly average temperatures of 23.7°C in Funchal and 23.2°C in Porto Santo. By contrast, February was the coldest month in both stations, registering medium monthly average temperatures of 16.2°C in Funchal and 15.1°C in Porto Santo.
In 2018, the number of tropical nights - in which the temperature reached 20°C or more - was 84 (102 in 2017) in Funchal, while in Porto Santo it stood at 67 (62 in 2017).
