Warmer temperatures, but fewer hours of sunshine
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) released today a summary of the main meteorological data for June 2024, simultaneously updating the respective Dashboard. This information1 is provided by the Delegation of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere I.P. (IPMA I.P), in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
Air Temperature
In June 2024, the highest average temperature (21.9 °C) was recorded at the Lugar de Baixo station while the lowest average temperature was recorded at Chão do Areeiro (12.1 °C).
Compared to the climatological normals2 for June, all stations for which this information was available (7 stations) showed higher values, with Santo da Serra standing out with a +2.0 °C deviation from its normal temperature.
Regarding the absolute maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in June, the highest extreme was observed at the Porto Moniz station (28,3 ºC on the 6th). The lowest extreme was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro (3.2 °C on the 21st). The Lido and Lugar de Baixo stations recorded 11 days this month with maximum temperatures above 25 ºC when the normal value for the last station is 2.8 days.
Precipitation
In June 2024, all stations recorded precipitation values, with the highest total precipitation recorded at the Santo da Serra station (91.1 mm). However, the maximum value of daily precipitation (26.4 mm) was observed on the 7th at the Ponta de São Lourenço.
Compared to the 1961-1990 climatological normal for June, the Chão do Areeiro station showed a negative anomaly of 32.4 mm, with the normal being equal to 69.9 mm. The remaining stations showed positive values, with the Santo da Serra station showing a value of 25.7 mm compared to the normal (65.4 mm).
Analysing the days with precipitation (rain, rainy and very rainy days), it was found that the maximum number of days with rain (days with 0.1 mm of precipitation or more) was recorded at the Santo da Serra station (28 days). The maximum number of rainy days (days with 1.0 mm of precipitation or more) was recorded at Santana station (13 days). The Santo da Serra station also recorded 2 very rainy days (days with 10 mm of precipitation or more).
Relative Humidity
In June 2024, the average monthly values of relative humidity ranged from 59% at Pico do Areeiro to 95% in Santo da Serra. The minimum daily value of relative air humidity (2%) was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro station on the 22nd, while the maximum value (100%) was reached at 8 stations, on different days of the month.
Wind
In June 2024, among stations with an anemometer, the Ponta de São Lourenço station recorded the highest average wind intensity (23.4 km/h), while the Monte/Quinta Jardins do Imperador station recorded the lowest average (3.8 km/h). The highest wind gust was recorded on the 24th in Ponta de São Lourenço (82.0 km/h).
Sunshine duration
The maximum and minimum sunshine duration in June were 221.4 hours in Santa Catarina/Aeroporto3, and 132.1 hours at the Funchal Observatory, with the normal value for the latter station being 150.6 hours.
Sea Water Temperature
In June, the average sea water temperature measured at Molhe da Pontinha (Funchal) was 20.8 °C (+0.7 °C than the normal value for this month). The highest average was recorded on the 28th (21.7 °C) and the lowest (20.1 °C) on the 8th.

1 - Daily data and cumulative values for the month refer to observations from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
2 -The 1971-2000 normals are used for the Porto Santo/Airport and Funchal/Observatory stations. For the remaining stations, the normals for the periods 1961-1990 are applied.
3 - There are no normal values for insolation for the Santa Catarina/Airport station.
