Lugar de Baixo was the warmest station and Santo da Serra the wettest
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) released today a summary of the main meteorological data for September 2024, simultaneously updating the respective Dashboard. This information1 is provided by the Delegation of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere I.P. (IPMA I.P), in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).
Air Temperature
In September 2024, the highest average temperature (24.2 °C) was recorded at the Lugar de Baixo station, while the lowest average temperature was recorded at Chão do Areeiro (12.8 °C).
Compared to the climatological normals2 for September, six out of the seven stations for which data was available recorded higher-than-normal values. The average temperature at Chão do Areeiro was exactly the same as the station’s normal.
Regarding the absolute maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in September, the highest extreme of 29.6 °C was observed at the São Vicente station (on the 3rd), while the lowest extreme was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro station (4.2 °C on the 4th). The Lugar de Baixo station recorded 30 days with maximum temperatures above 25 ºC, compared to the station’s normal of 24.5 days.
Precipitation
In September 2024, the highest total precipitation was recorded at the Santo da Serra meteorological station (63.5 mm). However, the highest daily precipitation (16.9 mm on the 28th) was observed at the Santana station.
Compared to the climatological normal for September (1961–1990), all stations recorded negative anomalies, with the most notable being at Chão do Areeiro, where the anomaly was -133.2 mm (normal: 169.7 mm).
When analysing days with precipitation (rain, rainy and very rainy days), the highest number of days with rain (days with 0.1 mm of precipitation or more) was observed at Santana (17 days). The maximum number of rainy days (days with 1.0 mm of precipitation or more) was recorded at Chão do Areeiro (11 days), while Santo da Serra experienced three very rainy days (days with 10 mm of precipitation or more).
Relative Humidity
In September 2024, the average monthly values of relative humidity ranged between 65% at Funchal/Observatory and 95% at Santo da Serra. The minimum daily value of relative humidity (4%) was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro station on the 29th and 30th, while the maximum value (100%) was observed at seven stations on different days throughout the month.
Wind
In September 2024, among the stations equipped with an anemometer, the highest average wind intensity was recorded at the Selvagem Grande station (26.2 km/h), whereas the lowest average was observed at the Lido station (3.4 km/h). The highest wind gust (108 km/h) was recorded at Pico Alto on the 12th.
Sunshine duration
The sunshine duration (hours of clear sky) in September amounted to 228.8 hours at Porto Santo (the normal value being 203.8 hours), 202.0 hours at Funchal/Observatory (normal: 188.7 hours), and 200.5 hours at the Santa Catarina/Aeroporto3 station.
Seawater Temperature
In September, the average seawater temperature measured at Molhe da Pontinha (Funchal) was 23.3 °C (+0.4 °C compared to the normal value for this month). The highest average temperature was recorded on the 14th and 15th (23.6 °C), while the lowest was noted on the 23rd and 24th (22.9 °C).

1 - Daily data and cumulative values for the month refer to observations from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
2 -The 1971-2000 normals are used for the Porto Santo/Airport and Funchal/Observatory stations. For the remaining stations, the normals for the periods 1961-1990 are applied.
3 - There are no normal values for insolation for the Santa Catarina/Airport station.
