In October 2024

Funchal/Observatory station recorded the highest temperatures, while Chão do Areeiro was the rainiest station

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) released today a summary of the main meteorological data for October 2024, simultaneously updating the respective Dashboard. This information1 is provided by the Delegation of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere I.P. (IPMA I.P), in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).

Air Temperature

In October 2024, the highest average temperature (23.3 °C) was recorded at the Funchal/Observatory station, and the lowest average temperature was observed at Pico do Areeiro (12.5°C).

Compared to the climatological normals2 for October, all seven stations for which data was available recorded higher-than-normal values. The station at Santo da Serra (17.3°C) registered the most significant deviation from the monthly normal, at +3.3°C.

Regarding the absolute maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in October, the highest recorded temperature was 29.8°C at Porto Moniz on the 21st, while the lowest was 2.6°C at Pico do Areeiro on the 26th. The Funchal/Observatory station experienced 26 days with maximum temperatures exceeding 25°C, compared to the normal value of 11.9 days for this station.

Precipitation 

In October 2024, the highest total precipitation was recorded at Chão do Areeiro (282.4 mm). However, the station at Prazeres observed the highest daily precipitation, with 56.4 mm on the 15th.

Compared to the climatological normals2 for October (1961–1990), nearly all stations recorded slight negative anomalies, except for Porto Santo/Airport, which had a total of 44.3 mm, marking a positive deviation of 4.4 mm. Santana station stood out with an anomaly of -27.5 mm (normal value: 160.9 mm).

When analysing days with precipitation (rain, rainy and very rainy days), Santana recorded the highest number of rainy days (21 days with 0.1 mm or more), while both Santana and Pico do Areeiro had 15 days with very rainy days (with 1.0 mm or more). Pico do Areeiro and Chão do Areeiro each recorded 9 very rainy days (days with 10 mm or more).

Relative Humidity 

In October 2024, the average monthly values of relative humidity ranged between 67% at Funchal/Observatory and 91% at Santo da Serra. The minimum daily value of relative humidity (3%) was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro station on the 29th and 30th, while the maximum value (100%) was observed at eight stations on different days throughout the month.

Wind

In October 2024, among the stations equipped with an anemometer, the highest average wind intensity was recorded at the Selvagem Grande station (28.3 km/h), whereas the lowest average was observed at the Lido station (1.3 km/h). The highest wind gust (106 km/h) was recorded at Chão do Areeiro on the 28th.

Sunshine duration

The sunshine duration (hours of clear sky) in October amounted to 214.5 hours at Funchal/Observatory (the normal value being 175.0 hours), 198.5 hours at Santa Catarina/Aeroporto3, and 188.7 hours at Porto Santo/Airport (normal value: 182.1 hours).

Seawater Temperature

In October, the average seawater temperature measured at Molhe da Pontinha (Funchal) was 23.4 °C (+1.1°C compared to the normal value for this month). The highest average temperature was recorded on the 5th (23.8 °C), and the lowest was noted on the 12th (22.8 °C).

Notes:

1 - Daily data and cumulative values for the month refer to observations from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

2 -The 1971-2000 normals are used for the Porto Santo/Airport and Funchal/Observatory stations. For the remaining stations, the normals for the periods 1961-1990 are applied.

3 - There are no normal values ​​for insolation for the Santa Catarina/Airport station.
