Chão do Areeiro meteorological station recorded the strongest wind gust: 134 km/h

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) has released today a summary of the main meteorological data for March 2025, simultaneously updating the corresponding dashboard. This information¹ is provided by the Delegation of the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA, I.P.) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).

Air Temperature

In March 2025, the highest average air temperature (17.7 °C) was recorded at the Funchal/Observatory station, while the lowest was observed at the Pico do Areeiro station (3.5 °C).

When compared with the climatological normals² for March, five of the six stations with available data recorded positive air temperature anomalies. The only exception was the Chão do Areeiro station, with a negative deviation of 1.1 °C. The highest positive deviation was observed at the Funchal/Observatory station, with +1.1 °C compared to the corresponding climatological normal.

As for the absolute maximum and minimum temperatures recorded during March, the extremes occurred on the 30th, at Lugar de Baixo (26.8 °C) and Pico do Areeiro (-2.0 °C), respectively.

Precipitation

In March 2025, the highest monthly precipitation total was recorded at the Chão do Areeiro station (623.4 mm), with the highest daily value (167.2 mm) also observed at this station, on the 19th. In contrast, the lowest monthly value was recorded at Selvagem Grande (12.0 mm).

Compared to the March climatological normal (1961–1990), all stations registered higher precipitation values, with Chão do Areeiro showing the most significant positive anomaly (+319.4 mm).

Regarding the number of days with precipitation (rain, rainy and very rainy days), Chão do Areeiro recorded the highest number of days with rain (29 days with ≥ 0.1 mm). The maximum number of rainy days (≥ 1.0 mm) and very rainy days (≥ 10 mm) was observed at the Pico do Areeiro station, with 27 and 17 days, respectively.

Relative Humidity

In March 2025, the average monthly values of relative humidity ranged from 62% at Funchal/Observatory to 94% at Chão do Areeiro. The minimum daily value (2%) was recorded at Quinta Grande on the 29th, while the maximum value (100%) was reached at eight stations on various days during the month.

Wind

Among the stations equipped with anemometers, Chão do Areeiro registered the highest average wind intensity in March 2025 (27.3 km/h), while the lowest was at the Lido station (3.6 km/h). The strongest wind gust was recorded at Chão do Areeiro on the 19th, reaching 134 km/h.

Sunshine Duration

The total sunshine duration (total hours of clear sky) in March amounted to 211.7 hours at Porto Santo/Airport (normal value: 171.0 hours), 204.7 hours at Santa Catarina/Airport³, and 204.2 hours at Funchal/Observatory (normal: 172.2 hours).

Seawater Temperature

In March, the average seawater temperature measured at the Molhe da Pontinha (Funchal) was 18.5 °C (+0.9 °C above the normal for this month). The highest average temperature (19.0 °C) was recorded on the first two days of the month, while the lowest (17.9 °C) occurred on the 17th March.

¹ Daily data and cumulative monthly values refer to observations made between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.

² The 1971-2000 normals were used for the Porto Santo/Airport and Funchal/Observatory stations. For the other stations, the 1961-1990 normals were applied.

³ No normal values for sunshine duration exist for the Santa Catarina/Airport station.
