In April 2025

Both temperature and precipitation levels were above climatological averages

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today a summary of the main meteorological indicators for April 2025, concurrently updating the respective Dashboard. This information¹ is provided by the Regional Delegation of the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA I.P.) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).

Air Temperature

In April 2025, the highest average air temperature was recorded at the Funchal/Observatory station (18.6 °C), while the lowest was observed at the Pico do Areeiro station (6.8 °C).
Compared to the climatological normals² for April, all six stations with available data recorded positive anomalies in mean air temperature. The largest deviation was observed at the Funchal/Observatory station, where the average was +1.7 °C above the normal.
Regarding absolute maximum and minimum temperatures, the highest absolute maximum was recorded in Porto Moniz (25.1 °C on the 8th), and the lowest minimum was observed at Pico do Areeiro (-2.0 °C on the 2nd).

Precipitation

In April 2025, the highest monthly precipitation was recorded at Pico do Areeiro (267.4 mm), while the highest daily value occurred at Chão do Areeiro on the 3rd, with 80.4 mm. Conversely, the lowest monthly total was recorded at Cancela (28.4 mm).
Relative to the climatological normal for April (period 1961–1990), almost all stations recorded higher monthly totals, with the exception of Santo da Serra, where the total (114.3 mm) fell below the average (134.0 mm). Nevertheless, Santo da Serra recorded the highest number of days with precipitation equal to or exceeding 0.1 mm, totalling 25 days.
In terms of rainy days (≥ 1.0 mm), the São Vicente and Prazeres stations each recorded 16 days. The highest number of very rainy days (≥ 10 mm) was observed at Pico do Areeiro, with 11 days.

Relative Humidity

In April 2025, the average monthly values of relative humidity ranged from 66% at the Funchal/Observatory station to 85% at Monte. The minimum daily value (4%) was recorded at Pico do Areeiro on the 27th and 28th, while the maximum value (100%) was observed at eight different stations on various days throughout the month.

Wind

Among the stations equipped with anemometers, the highest average wind intensity was recorded at Caniçal (20.9 km/h), and the lowest at Monte (4.3 km/h). The strongest wind gust of the month was also observed at Caniçal on the 1st, reaching 91 km/h.

Sunshine Duration

In April 2025, the number of sunshine hours (defined as hours of unobstructed solar radiation) amounted to195.6 hours at Porto Santo/Airport (normal value: 188.4 hours), 187.9 hours at Santa Catarina/Airport³ and 180.0 hours at Funchal/Observatory (normal value: 168.8 hours).

Seawater Temperature

In April, the average seawater temperature at the Molhe da Pontinha (Funchal) was 18.9 °C, representing a positive anomaly of +1.1 °C compared to the climatological normal. The highest recorded temperature occurred on the 28th (19.5 °C), and the lowest on the 4th (18.0 °C).

Notes:
¹ Daily data and cumulative monthly values refer to observations made between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.

² The 1971-2000 normals were used for the Porto Santo/Airport and Funchal/Observatory stations. For the other stations, the 1961-1990 normals were applied.

³ No normal values for sunshine duration exist for the Santa Catarina/Airport station.
