Funchal/Observatory station recorded the highest absolute maximum temperature, 33.7 ºC
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) released today a summary of the main meteorological data for August 2025, simultaneously updating the respective Dashboard. This information¹ is provided by the Delegation of the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA, I.P.) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).
Air Temperature
In August 2025, the highest average air temperature was recorded at the Lugar de Baixo station (24.6 ºC), while the lowest was observed at Chão do Areeiro (17.6 ºC).
When compared with the climatological normals² for August, all seven stations with available data recorded positive anomalies in the mean air temperature. The largest deviation, +2.8 ºC above the normal value, was observed at Chão do Areeiro.
With regard to extremes, the absolute maximum temperature reached 33.7 ºC at Funchal/Observatory on the 10th, while the absolute minimum was 5.4 ºC at Pico do Areeiro on the 29th. It is noteworthy that both Lugar de Baixo and Funchal/Observatory recorded 31 days with maximum temperatures above 25 ºC, compared with a normal of 25.5 days (Lugar de Baixo) and 22.2 days (Funchal/Observatory). Furthermore, the stations of Funchal/Observatory, Funchal/Lido, Lugar de Baixo, and Porto Moniz recorded 31 tropical nights, i.e., nights when the minimum temperature did not fall below 20 ºC.
Precipitation
In August 2025, the highest monthly total precipitation was recorded at Santo da Serra (51.6 mm), where the highest daily value was also observed on the 27th (28.6 mm). Conversely, Cancela registered the lowest monthly value (0.1 mm).
Regarding the climatological normal² for August, four stations presented positive anomalies, with Santo da Serra standing out with +8.2 mm. In the remaining stations, negative anomalies were observed, reaching -16.6 mm at Chão do Areeiro.
As regards days with precipitation (rain, rainy days, and very rainy days), the Santo da Serra station recorded the highest number of days with rain (20 days with precipitation ≥ 0.1 mm) and the highest number of rainy days (7 days with precipitation ≥ 1.0 mm). Additionally, one very rainy day (≥ 10 mm) was recorded at Santo da Serra, Pico do Areeiro, Santana, and São Vicente.
Relative Humidity
In August 2025, the monthly mean relative humidity ranged between 40% at Pico do Areeiro and 87% at Santana and Santo da Serra. The lowest daily value of 2% was recorded at Pico do Areeiro on the 11th, while the daily maximum reached 100% at eight stations, on different days throughout the month.
Wind
In August 2025, among the stations equipped with anemometers, the highest average wind intensity was recorded at Caniçal (20.7 km/h), while the lowest occurred at Monte (3.0 km/h). The highest gust of the month was recorded at Pico Alto on the 1st, reaching 82 km/h.
Sunshine Duration
In August 2025, the number of sunshine hours (defined as hours of unobstructed solar radiation) amounted to 263.6 hours at Santa Catarina/Airport³, 238.2 hours at Funchal/Observatory (above the normal of 230.7 hours), and 230.1 hours at Porto Santo (below the normal of 241.4 hours).
Seawater temperature
In August 2025, the average sea water temperature at Molhe da Pontinha (Funchal) was 23.4 ºC, corresponding to a positive anomaly of +0.8 ºC compared to the normal for the month. The highest value occurred on the 28th (24.0 ºC), and the lowest on the 13th (22.7 ºC).

² – The 1971–2000 normals are used for Porto Santo/Airport and Funchal/Observatory stations. For the remaining stations, the 1961–1990 normals are used.
³ – There are no normal values for insolation at the Santa Catarina/Airport station.
