Highest meteorological extremes occurred at Chão do Areeiro
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today a summary of the main meteorological data for October 2025, while simultaneously updating the respective dashboard. This information¹ is provided by the Delegation of the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere, I.P. (IPMA I.P.) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).
Air temperature
In October 2025, the highest average air temperature (23.3 °C) was recorded at the Lugar de Baixo station, while the lowest average temperature was observed at Pico do Areeiro (12.5 °C).
Compared with the climatological normals² for October, all seven stations for which this information was available recorded higher values, with particular emphasis on the Santo da Serra station, which was 3.1 °C above the normal value for this month (14.0 °C).
Regarding absolute maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in October, the highest extreme—29.6 °C—occurred at the Porto Moniz station (on the 27th), while the lowest absolute minimum was recorded at Pico do Areeiro (5.0 °C on the 30th). The Lugar de Baixo station recorded 28 days with maximum temperatures equal to or above 25 °C, compared with the normal value of 14.0 days for this station.
Precipitation
In October 2025, the highest total precipitation was recorded at the Chão do Areeiro meteorological station (307.7 mm), which also registered the highest daily precipitation value (153.5 mm on the 27th).
Compared with the 1961–1990 climatological normal for October, positive deviations were recorded at Funchal/Observatory (+4.8 mm) and Chão do Areeiro (+0.3 mm). All other stations showed negative anomalies, most notably Santana (-94.1 mm) and Santo da Serra (-77.3 mm).
Considering the number of days with precipitation (days with rain, rainy days, and very rainy days), the Santo da Serra station stood out with the highest number of rain days (25 days with ≥0.1 mm) and also the greatest number of rainy days (16 days with ≥1.0 mm).
At Monte, six very rainy days (≥10 mm) were recorded—the highest number among the stations analysed.
Relative humidity
In October 2025, the monthly mean relative humidity values ranged between 71% at Funchal/Observatory and 97% at Santo da Serra. The minimum daily value of 10% occurred at Pico do Areeiro (on the 5th, 17th, and 18th), while the maximum value of 100% was recorded at eleven stations on various days throughout the month.
Wind
In October 2025, among the stations equipped with an anemometer, Chão do Areeiro recorded the highest mean wind intensity (15.7 km/h), while the lowest was observed at Monte (3.1 km/h). The highest wind gust was also recorded at Chão do Areeiro, reaching 92 km/h on the 28th.
Sunshine
In October 2025, the total sunshine duration (number of hours of bright sunshine) reached 172.7 hours at Porto Santo/Airport, below the climatological normal (182.1 hours). At Funchal/Observatory, 153.3 hours were recorded, also below the normal value (175.0 hours). At Santa Catarina/Airport³, a total of 143.9 hours was observed.
Sea water temperature
In October, the mean sea water temperature measured at the Molhe da Pontinha (Funchal) was 22.8 °C (+0.5 °C compared with the normal value for this month). The highest mean temperature was recorded on the 25th (23.4 °C) and the lowest on the 29th (21.7 °C).

1 – Daily data and monthly accumulated values refer to observations taken from 09:00 to 09:00.
2 – The 1971–2000 normals were used for Porto Santo/Airport and Funchal/Observatory stations. For the remaining stations, the 1961–1990 normals were used.
3 – There are no normal values for sunshine duration available for the Santa Catarina/Airport station.
