DREM publishes the first results of the 2024 Community Innovation Survey
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) publishes the first indicators on business innovation, for the reference period 2022 to 2024, relating to the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), compiled from the 2024 Community Innovation Survey (CIS 2024).
This statistical operation, carried out on a biennial basis, results from a collaboration between Statistics Portugal (INE) and the Directorate-General for Education and Science Statistics (DGEEC), the entity with delegated powers within the National Statistical System. In the case of the ARM, coordination of the operation was carried out by DREM, with the CIS conducted among 541 enterprises with registered office in the Region.
In the period 2022–2024, 36.5% of enterprises in the ARM were innovative, of which 50.3% introduced innovations with environmental benefits
Between 2022 and 2024, 36.5% of enterprises in the ARM had innovation activities (41.6% between 2020 and 2022), a percentage lower than the national figure (42.5%). By type of innovation, 17.8% of enterprises introduced product innovation (goods or services) and 32.4% introduced process innovation (22.4% and 38.0%, respectively, in the 2020–2022 biennium).
In the same period, 50.3% of innovative enterprises introduced innovations with environmental benefits obtained within the enterprise and/or during the consumption or use of goods or services by the end user, with 47.9% introducing innovations with environmental benefits obtained within the enterprises and 47.1% introducing innovations with benefits obtained during the consumption or use of goods or services by the end user.
Between 2022 and 2024, 2.8% of innovative enterprises cooperated with other enterprises or organisations in R&D activities and/or other innovation activities, a value 5.6 percentage points (pp) below the national average (8.4%).
In 2024, total expenditure on innovation activities reached 27.8 million euros, up by 21.7% over 2022, representing approximately 0.5% of the total turnover of enterprises (the same proportion as in 2022). Nationally, expenditure on innovation activities amounted to 4 865.1 million euros (1.0% of turnover), increasing by 25.3% over 2022.
8.5% of enterprises turnover in 2024 resulted from the introduction of new or improved products (-2.3 pp compared to 2022), of which 6.7% resulted from the introduction of goods or services new to the enterprise and 1.8% from the introduction of goods or services new to the market (9.9% and 0.8% in 2022, respectively).
