DREM releases “Em Foco” publication with statistical indicators for the Autonomous Region of Madeira related to the sea

On National Day of the Sea, celebrated today, 16th November, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) updates the compilation of statistical indicators related to the Sea for the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), first published in this joint format in 2021. It should be noted that most of these indicators can also be found across several thematic areas on DREM’s official website.

This edition of “Em Foco” presents data on fisheries, aquaculture, the International Shipping Register, cruise ships, recreational vessels, maritime transport of passenger and goods, blue flag beaches, federated athletes in in sports related to the sea, tourist entertainment enterprises with sea activities, as well as the results of the second Ocean Satellite Account of the ARM, released on 13th November, with data for the years 2020, 2021 and 2022.

The main conclusions of the study are summarised below:

  • Ocean Satellite Account – Ocean Economy represents 12.1% of the regional economy;
  • Fishery – In 2024, landed catch decreased by 25.2% in volume and 8.2% in value;
  • Aquaculture – In 2024, production fell by 2.4%, but sales value increased by 6.6%;
  • International Shipping Register – Both merchant vessels and recreational craft continued to grow in 2024;
  • Cruises – In 2024, the number of transit passengers reached a new record;
  • Maritime Transport of Goods – Unloading of goods increased in 2024;
  • Maritime Passenger Transport – Madeira–Porto Santo line decreased by 0.7% in 2024;
  • Blue Flag Beaches – In 2025, 18 beaches in the ARM were awarded the Blue Flag;
  • Federated sports – In 2023/2024, the number of federated athletes in sports related to the sea declined;
  • Tourist Entertainment Enterprises with Sea Activities – In 2025, the number of enterprises increased to 184.
