DREM releases "In Focus" with statistical indicators related to the sea for the Autonomous Region of Madeira

One day before the National Day of the Sea, November 16, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases, for the fourth consecutive year, a compilation of indicators for the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) concerning the sea. Most of these indicators can be found in different thematic areas of the DREM's website. This "In Focus" includes data on fisheries, aquaculture, International Shipping Register, cruise ships, maritime transport of passengers and goods, blue flag beaches, federate athletes in sports related to the sea and tourist entertainment enterprises with sea activities. Additionally, the publication also revisits the data from the Satellite Account of the Sea of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, released in 2020, with the Portuguese autonomous regions being the first to have this important tool among all regions of the world, with its reissue planned for 2025.

The main conclusions of the study are summarised below:

  • Ocean Satellite Account – Maritime economy accounts for more than 10% of the region's economy;
  • Fishery – In 2023, the landed catch decreased in volume (-0.2%) compared to 2022 but increased in value (+17.1%);
  • Aquaculture – Production decreased in 2023;
  • International Shipping Register – Strong growth in the last eleven years;
  • Cruises – In 2023, the sector continued the recovery that began in 2022;
  • Maritime Transport of Goods – In 2023, unloaded goods increased by 8,3% compared to 2022;
  • Maritime Passenger Transport – Madeira-Porto Santo Line experienced a growth of 20.2% in 2023;
  • Blue Flag Beaches – 17 beaches in the ARM received this award in 2024;
  • Federated Sports – Number of federate athletes in sports related to the sea reached a record in 2021/2022;
  • Tourist entertainment enterprises with sea activities – Number of enterprises grew in 2023.
