Turnover generated by trade enterprises headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 42.3% compared to the previous year
In 2022, the trade enterprises headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira generated a turnover of 3,751.4 million euros (an increase of 42.3% compared to the previous year) and employed 13,824 employees (a 4.5% increase compared to the previous year). The 3,675 active enterprises (a 2.7% increase from 2021) in the trade sector were distributed among 634 enterprises dedicated to “Trade, maintenance, and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles” (17.3% of the total), 1,024 focused on “Wholesale Trade excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles” (27.9% of the total), and 2,017 related to “Retail Trade excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles” (54.9%).
The turnover of the trade sector was mainly concentrated (60.2%) in Wholesale Trade (2,257.4 million euros), with 32.0% (1,199.8 million euros) corresponding to the Retail subsector and 7.8% (294.2 million euros) to the Automotive subsector (including sales and maintenance). The commercial margin obtained by Trade enterprises in 2022 amounted to 633.2 million euros (a 21.8% increase from 2021).
The number of enterprises in the trade sector accounted for 11.5% of the total non-financial enterprises operating in the Region (12.0% in 2021), which generated 41.6% of the total turnover of non-financial enterprises (40.4% in 2021). In terms of employees, this sector employed 15.1% of the employees in all non-financial enterprises (15.6% in 2021), and 77.8% of the commercial margin of these enterprises was generated by Trade sector enterprises (81.4% in 2021).

Compared to 2021, Trade sector enterprises showed increases of 42.3% in turnover, 14.4% in gross value added, and 21.8% in the commercial margin. The number of enterprises increased by 2.7%, and the number of employees increased by 4.5%, with earnings growing by 10.1%.
In terms of detailed information, and as mentioned above, it is important to note that the Trade sector is composed of three divisions: Trade, maintenance, and repair of motor vehicles (division 45 of CAE Rev..3), Wholesale Trade (division 46), and Retail Trade (division 47).
The turnover and the number of employees and enterprises in the Trade, Maintenance, and Repair of Motor Vehicles and Motorcycles increased by 15.1%, 4.0%, and 6.2%, respectively, compared to 2021. Wholesale Trade recorded a strong increase in turnover (+70.6%) and showed an increase in the number of enterprises (+4.1%) and employees (+3.8%) compared to 2021. Retail Trade observed an increase in turnover (+13.5% compared to the previous year), employees (+5.0%), and the number of enterprises (+1.0%).
