Estimated unemployment rate in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 7.3%
The Labour Force Survey results, for the 2nd quarter of 2022, indicate that the unemployment rate for the Autonomous Region of Madeira was estimated at 7.3%. This value decreased by 0.2 percentage points (pp) when compared to the previous quarter and by 1.1 pp from the same quarter of last year. Compared to the 4th quarter of 2019 (pre-pandemic COVID-19 period), there was a drop of 0.1 pp.
The estimated unemployed population in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 9.6 thousand persons, dropping by 10.1% from the same quarter of last year (1.1 thousand persons) and 2.1% compared to the previous quarter (about 200 persons).
The employed population was estimated at 122.5 thousand persons, representing a year-on-year increase of 5.0% (5.8 thousand persons) and a quarterly growth of 1.2% (1.4 thousand). Of the employed population, 14.8 thousand persons worked from home (15.0% of employed women and 9.1% of employed men). Note that according to the time series of the Labour Force Survey, the employed population for the 2nd quarter of 2022 is the highest ever in the Region.
The activity rate of working-age people (aged 16 to 89), in the 2nd quarter of 2022, was estimated at 60.7%, up by 2.0 pp to the same quarter of last year and 0.5 pp from the previous quarter. The activity rate for women was 56.8%, lower than that of men (65.3%) by 8.5 pp.
The inactive population stood at 120.8 thousand persons in the reference quarter, decreasing by 4.0% quarter-on-quarter and 1.1% from the previous quarter.
The unemployment rate for Portugal decreased by 5.7%, - 0.2 pp from the previous quarter and by 1.0 pp from the same quarter of the previous year.
The Autonomous Region of Madeira (7.3%) and Área Metropolitana de Lisboa (6.8%) recorded the highest unemployment rates in the reference quarter, with Alentejo (4.4%), Centro (5.2%) and Algarve (5.3%) having the lowest rates. The Autonomous Region of Azores had a 5.9% rate, also higher than the country´s rate.
In five of the 7 NUTS2 regions of the country, the unemployment rate fell in quarterly terms, with the largest drop being recorded in the Algarve (-1.7 pp). Área Metropolitana de Lisboa maintained the value of the previous quarter and the Norte was the only region where there was a quarterly increase ( +0.1 pp). In year-on-year terms, the unemployment rate decreased in all regions of the country, except for Área Metropolitana de Lisboa, where it rose by 0.1 pp.
