In the year 2021
Production and consumption of electric energy recovered compared to 2020 but did not reach the 2019 figures
According to the information published by the Directorate-General of Energy and Geology (DGEG) last 30th of November, DREM makes available today data on the gross production, consumption and number of consumers of electricity in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) with reference to the year 2021.
The gross electricity generated in the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 2021 stood at 888.4 GWh, representing an increase of 5.2% compared to 2020. Despite this growth, the figures of 2019 have not yet been reached, showing a decrease of 2.6%. In 2021, 71.5% of energy production was of thermal origin, 15.3% of wind origin, 9.4% of hydro origin and 3.8% of photovoltaic origin.
Final electricity consumption was 798.5 GWh, which represented a growth of 4.4% compared to 2020 and a drop of 2.9% compared to 2019. Domestic consumption (which represented 35.4% of total consumption) increased by 4.5% between 2020 and 2021, a trend also seen in non-domestic consumption (+4.4%), namely that related to different economic activities. Thus, " Construction " (+24.3%) was the sector with the largest increase in energy consumption, followed by " Extractive industries" and " Accommodation and food service activities " with +19.0% and +17.6%, respectively.
The municipalities in the west of Madeira recorded the most pronounced increases, of 10.0% in Ribeira Brava, 8.8% in Calheta and 8.1% in Ponta do Sol.
