In the first half of 2024
Electricity production in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 2.1% compared to the same period last year
The electricity production, estimated from data provided by the Madeira Electricity Company (EEM), increased by 2.1% in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year.
Analysing the composition of electrical energy distributed in the first half of 2024—totalling approximately 456.5 Gigawatt hours (GWh) - it is observed that compared to January to June 2023, there was a reduction in the share of thermal (-3.9%) and hydropower (-6.1%) sources in electricity production. In contrast, there was an increase in the share of wind power (+33.5%), urban solid waste (+6.5%), and photovoltaic (+4.2%) sources. Consequently, the proportion of total energy distributed from thermal sources decreased from 66.2% in the first half of 2023 to 62.3% in the current period, meaning the share of renewable sources increased to 37.7% from 33.8% in the first six months of 2023.
Notably, the use of natural gas as a source for electricity production increased significantly, accounting for 16.5% of the total (up from 9.4% in the same period in 2023), with an 80.3% increase in electricity production from this source.
Focusing on the second quarter of 2024, electricity production was 227.6 GWh, reflecting a 1.4% increase compared to the same period last year.
