In the 1st half of 2025
Electricity production in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 2.4% compared to the same period of the previous year
The electricity production estimated based on electricity distribution data provided by Madeira Electricity Company (Empresa de Eletricidade da Madeira – EEM) increased by 2.4% year-on-year in the 1st half of 2025.
An analysis of the electricity production mix for the period under review — totalling approximately 467.6 Gigawatt hours (GWh) — shows that, compared to January to June 2024, there was a greater contribution from hydroelectric sources (+105.5%), photovoltaic sources (+5.3%), and urban solid waste (+0.3%), while contributions from wind power (-17.4%) and thermal sources (-7.6%) declined.
As a result, the share of total electricity generated from thermal sources declined from 62.3% in the 1st half of 2024 to 56.2% in the corresponding period of 2025, indicating an increase in the share of renewables, which reached 43.8% (compared to 37.7% in the first six months of 2024).
Of note is the increased use of natural gas as a source for electricity production, accounting for 18.1% of total production (up from 16.5% in the same period of 2024).
When narrowing the analysis to the 2nd quarter of 2025, electricity distribution amounted to 232.4 GWh, representing a year-on-year increase of 2.1%.
