At the Quinta Grande meteorological station, the maximum daily temperature exceeded 30 °C on two consecutive days
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira released today a summary of the main meteorological data for April 2024, simultaneously updating the respective Dashboard. This information1 is provided by the Delegation of the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA I.P) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
Air Temperature
In April 2024, the highest average temperature (20.4 °C) was recorded at the Funchal/Observatory station while the lowest average temperature was recorded at Pico do Areeiro (10.5 °C).
Compared to the climatological normals2 of April, all stations for which it was possible to make this information available (7 stations) showed higher values, with Chão do Areeiro standing out with a deviation of +5.2 °C from its normal temperature.
Regarding the absolute maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in April, extremes were observed at the Quinta Grande (30.3 °C on the 12th and 13th) and Pico do Areeiro (-0.6 °C on the 28th).
Precipitation
In Abril 2024, the highest total precipitation was recorded at the Chão do Areeiro meteorological station (67.8 mm), with the highest daily value (35.2 mm) occurring on the 6th. Conversely, the lowest monthly value was recorded at Quinta Grande (1.5 mm).
Compared to the 1961-1990 climatological normal for April, the Chão do Areeiro showing a negative anomaly (143.8 mm). No station showed positive values regarding the normal.
Analysing days with precipitation (days with rain, rainy and very rainy), it was found that the maximum number of days with rain (days with 0.1 mm of precipitation or more) was recorded at the Santana and Santo da Serra stations (both with 15 days). The maximum number of rainy days (days with 1.0 mm of precipitation or more) was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro station (9 days). Prazeres, Monte and Pico do Areeiro stations recorded 2 very rainy days (days with 10 mm or more of precipitation).
Relative Humidity
In April 2024, the average monthly values of relative humidity ranged from 50% at Quinta Grande to 92% in São Jorge. The minimum daily value of relative air humidity (2%) was recorded at the Lido and Quinta Grande stations on several days of the month, while the maximum value (100%) was reached at 9 stations, also on different days of the month.
Wind
In April 2024, among stations with anemometers, the Chão do Areeiro station recorded the highest average wind speed (17.4 km/h), while the Monte/Quinta Jardins do Imperador station recorded the lowest average (4.9 km/h). The highest wind gust was recorded on the 5th at Ponta do Pargo (128 km/h).
Insolation
The maximum and minimum Insolation (number of hours of uncovered sunlight) in April were 272.5 hours at Porto Santo and 253.1 hours at Funchal/Observatory, compared to normal values of 188.4 hours and 168.8 hours, respectively.
Sea Water Temperature
In April, the average sea water temperature measured at Molhe da Pontinha (Funchal) was 19.3 °C (+1.5 ºC compared to the normal value for this month). The highest average was recorded on the 27th (20.1 °C) and the lowest (18.4 °C) on the 1st and 6th of April.

1 - Daily data and monthly cumulative values refer to observations from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
2 - The 1971-2000 normals are used for the Porto Santo/Airport and Funchal/Observatory stations. For the remaining stations, the normals for the periods 1961-1990 are applied.
