Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira releases Agriculture and Fishery Statistics for 2020

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today statistical information regarding Agriculture and Fishery for the year 2020. In addition to the tables made available on its website, an annual publication is also released, including an analysis report, from which the following highlights are extracted.

In agriculture: Main crops output dropped in 2020

- Potato remains the crop with the highest output (25,914 tonnes), with a decrease of 3,534 tonnes between 2019 and 2020. Sugarcane emerges as the second most relevant production in the group of temporary crops with 9,727 tonnes, a lower value than in 2019 by 87 tonnes.

- In permanent crops, banana output (22,284 tonnes, -2.0% compared to the previous year) and Vitis vinifera grapes (3,900 tonnes, -1.5% that in 2019) stood out. The extra class of banana represented 80.5% of the total processed by GESBA – the regional company that manages the banana industry. In the case of grapes - whose information source is the Institute of Wine, Embroidery and Crafts of Madeira, (IVBAM, I.P.) - it should be noted that 78.7% of production was Negra Mole variety (78.2% in 2019).

In animal production: Aviculture grew in 2020, while the livestock slaughtered decreased

- In aviculture, the egg production, in 2020, reached 19.8 million units, growing 4.2% over the previous year. The production of poultry meat increased 8.9%, totalling 3.4 thousand tonnes in the year of reference.

- The weight of livestock slaughtered and approved for consumption in 2020 was 928.4 tonnes, decreasing 7.0% from the previous year. Slaughtered pigs decreased by 15.3%, cows by 6.3%, goats by 31.1% and sheep by 12.4%. Cows were the most slaughtered species in 2020 (93.5% of the total).

In fishery: Landed catch declined in 2020

- In 2020, the landed catch in the Autonomous Region of Madeira decreased by 39.4% in volume to 4.862,8 tonnes and down by 34.4% in value to 14.5 million euros.

- The catches of tuna and tuna-like species went down by 55.0% and the catches of black-scabbard fish down by 4.9%, reaching 2.3 and 2.1 thousand tonnes, respectively.

- The first sale value of these two species was respectively 6.7 and 6.4 million euros (-48.7% and -14.3% in the same order).

Regional Economic Accounts of Agriculture (REGEAA) and Exports: Agricultural output increased by 1.4% in 2019

- The REGEAA data show that the agricultural output in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 105.4 million euros in 2019, increasing 1.4% in nominal terms when compared with the previous year. 83.5% of the total agricultural output came from crop output and 11.9% from animal output.

- The Autonomous Region of Madeira dispatched 18.1 thousand tonnes of banana in 2020, 5.4 tonnes of anona and 3.6 tonnes of avocado. There were also exported in the year of reference 2.7 thousand protea flowers and 1.2 thousand cymbidium stems.

Agricultural prices: Indices for agricultural goods and means of production decreased in 2020

- In 2020, the producer price index for agricultural goods decreased by 5.0% over 2019. This decrease was driven by the down in the price index of other crop products (-13.5%),  plants and flowers (-6.2%) and potatoes (-6.1%).

- The price index of the means of agricultural production decreased by 1.3% from 2019, which can be partly explained by a drop in the price index of energy and lubricants (-10.4%).
